Ten Middle Distance Performers in Fremont Villager and Gumptious Equally Weighted at 122 at Rockingham ROCKINGHAM PARK, Salem, N. H., Aug. 17. Ten middle distance performers, representing eight different interests, have been named overnight to contest tomorrows featured mile and a sixteenth Fre-; mont Purse. Styled for-ieur-y ear-olds and upward, the Fremont carries a ,000 purse with Mrs. P. Weyermans Villager and E. A. Simpsons Gumptious equal heavyweights at 115 pounds. Villager has failed to live up to expectations in New England this season while meeting the top handicap performers in this sector. Prior to shipping North from Florida, the Rounders colt won a pair of middle distance races at Gulfstream Park in impressive fashion. The four-year-old has been postward 10 times since his bow at Suffolk Downs and the best he has to show for his efforts is a pair of thirds. Tomorrows opposition is regarded less formidable than in his previous outings and with capable Keith Stuart slated to ride in the Fremont, Villager may take this opportunity to get back in winning form. Pil-ayya, a mediocre plater, recently claimed by Mrs. Weyerman, has been named as a running mate for Villager and will be handled by apprentice Conlon at 100 pounds. Gumptious won a pair of races during the New England campaign, both at the spring meeting at Lincoln Downs. Since that time the son of Star Beacon has been close on many occasions but cannot seem to shake a jinx that appears to be on his trail. T. P. Morgan holds a strong hand in the Fremont with Mostest, a six-year-old son of Blenheim H. Two Bob, who has a pair of races over the local oval that were against much better than he meets tomorrow. In a recent mile and a sixteenth feature, Mostest finished fourth to Blue Dare, Laran and Rush Prince, beaten a couple of lengths, and off that effort rates consideration. Last year the Morgan stallion raced in top flight company at Santa Anita and a semblance of any of those races would make him a standout in the Fremont. Jim Carrs Top Spring with Tony De-Spirito in the irons will attract ample support in tomorrows race. The son of Olympic Zenith has been sprinting without sue- cess of late but may steal a long lead in tomorrows race. The others in the Fremont are Ralph Lowes Regal and Mrs. A. R. Smiths Ruth Hanson, a coupling being trained by C. P. Hatfield; Emerald Hill Stables Eternal Moon, J. P. Ayers Knights Reward and R. Slaughters Marthas Wave.
