Lincoln, Nebr., Meeting Showing Decided Gains Handle Up 10,000 First Five Days; Homebreds Go in Feature By DEAN "WILLIAMS Sta J Correspondent LINCOLN, Nebr., Aug. 17. The first week of racing at this oval is now a matter of record and a very enlightening record it -is; The mutuel total for the first five days of racing is up nearly. 10,000 over last years first five-day jrecbrd. Saturdays record crowd bet the second all-time high of 03,493 It is a bit less than the all-time high for a days racing of 25,000 handled here on closing day last year. The fine cards presented by Ralph Stubbs have helped to boost the handle, along with the good weather that has prevailed. The better homebred horses take the spoltlight in the Sowers Club Handicap, a yearly feature at this track. The race is a handicap for Nebraska-breds exclusively, over the six and one-half furlongs distance. The three highweights in the race, Irish Villon, 118; Vilas, 117; and Wealthy Saint, 115, have been racing with the top horses on the circuit. The three-year-old filly, Denver Lady, got into the race at 1Q8.; The others have come from out of the claiming ranks to test the highweights. They are Keen Olo, 113; Shadore, 110; Morphil,112, and Mary Heathen, 107. Mrs. E. L. Yates Irish Villon has been racing at the peak of his form in the last three weeks, and in all probability the best form of his entire racing career. The Department of Agriculture-bred gelding started his good racing form under the guidance of jockey Leon Cravens, who has ridden him in all of his engagements since then. He won an allowances affair easily by four and one-half lengths. His most recent effort was in the Elks Club Handicap in which he won and was disqualified, to be placed fourth. He unfortunately will not have the services of his regular rider. As coincidence would have it, the contention will come from another Department of Agriculture-bred horse, Vilas, who is also by the Remount Stallion .Villon. The lightly-campaigned gelding turned in his best effort in the Hotel Capital Handicap Saturday, which was over the same distance he will be asked to run tomorrow. He was only beaten a length and one-half by Star Spot, Whatcetera and Teal. Vilas appeared as if he needed the race as a tightener and will probably improve over this effort. - .
