. VanBerg Entry of McGrathiana, Fine Fiddle Favored at Hazel Twosome Meets Clear Day, Suffki, Badger and Abisok In Six-Furlong Offering HAZEL PARK, Mich., Aug. 17. Marion H. VanBerg, colorful Nebraska horseman, will send out a favored entry, McGrathiana and Fine Fiddle, at this popular Motor City course tomorrow afternoon in the featured Pontiac Purse. Under the allowance terms of the Pontiac, McGrathiana, a four-year-old Halcyon Gift-sired gelding, will be one of the highweights in the six furlongs sprint with 112 pounds, while his stablemate, Fine Fiddle, a four-year-old daughter of First Fiddle and Janesina, gets in the Tuesday headliner under a 107-pound burden. McGrathiana was soundly trounced here Saturday afternoon in the Speed Burners Handicap but, previous to that engagement, he lost a purse through a disqualification in the six and one-half furlongs Ten Mile Road on August 10 after stepping to the wire, with a two-length advantage over Radical, who was awarded the major share of the spoils because of McGrathianas foul during the stretch run. McGrathiana visited the winners ring at the Detroit race course on two occasions this season and his most notable success was a sparkling decision in the six-furlong Palmer Park, decided in 1:10. Fine Fiddle turned in a game performance here last week in the six-furlong De-quindre Purse, finishing third back of the Irish-bred Bay Bloom and Sistime.in a fast-run race. Before she started in the Dequin-dre, the VanBerg miss beat a fair band of sprinters in an overnight dash here August 6, stepping six furlongs through heavy footing in a sharp 1:16. Jockey Willie Cox, sixth today in the Hazel Park-riding standings, undoubtedly will have the mount on one of the VanBerg stable starters in the Pontiac. Badger Fancies Soft Track While the VanBerg duo rates -highly in the Pontiac, any one of the four other probable starters could give the choices plent of trouble with the running of a "big race." In the field named to oppose McGrathiana and Fine Fiddle in the Pontiac are Craig and Jesters Suffki, 112; Saginaw Stables versatile and hard-hitting Badger, 106; Ralph Lowes Clear Day, 106, and Grace Kosibas locally-owned Abisok, who is pegged at 106 pounds for the Tuesday principal offering. Badger, a five-year-old Blue Flyer-sired stallion, moves up several pounds on an "off" track and he was a good class victor at the MRA track on July 18, trimming Lonoke Flash, Wisenheimer and several other useful sprinters on a sloppy strip. In his only Hazel Park engagement, the Saginaw Stable racer finished fourth in the Dequindre. Howard Craig, who has been showing improved saddle form during the past week, will guide Badger in the Pontiac, according to word from trainer B. H. Wise. Tommy Barrow, one of the more popular reinsmen at Michigan meetings, will guide Suffki in the Pontiac, and Joe Valenti is engaged to handle Clear Day, successful in two outings this year, one at Sportsmans Park and the other at the Detroit Race Course. Robert Lee Baird, who won the Bent Twig Purse here last week end for the Kosiba establishment with Sub Factor, may accept the mount on Abisok. Best supporting attraction on the Hazel Park Tuesday card is the six-furlong fifth race, which matches seven useful sprinters, four-year-olds and older. William E. Schmidts Nobility, who will have the saddle services of Tony Ferraiuolo, Mrs. Marion Bartons Fast Slam, and E. D. Davis Har-peth, who lost a race last out through a disqualification, are expected to go well in the secondary offering. Completing the likely starting band are J. P. Millers Riot, M. Andrews Pollys Delay, Jack Adlers speedy Flaming Tera,- and Golden Pelt, from the Mrs. L. Seafert and Mrs. P. Lutes barn. Post time on week days at this east side Motor City oval is 3:30 p. m. JOCKEY WILLIAM COX Will be astride one of the VanBerg starters in the Pontiac Purse at Hazel Pgjk today.
