Ten Ten Derby Derby Hopes Hopes Await Await Call Call to to Post; Post; Lea Lea Lane Lane Heads Heads Kentucky Kentucky Oaks Oaks Field Field Summer Tan Drills Six Furlongs in 1:14 Fortunate to Avert Mishap As Horse Working at Same Time Is Pulled Up Suddenly By CHARLES HATTON CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville. Ky , May 5. — The prospective field for the 8lst and richest Kentucky Derby now totak 10, representative of the best of the nations three-year-olds. They are Nashua, his arch rival Summer Tan, the Californian Swaps, Racing Fool. Flying Fury, Honeys Alibi, Jeans Joe, Trim Destiny, Blue Lem and Nabesna. There is an outside chance that Gemerica may be added to these, though his immediate future is indefinite. The only one of the probables who showed a really serious work this morning was Summer Tan whom Sherrill Ward sent six furlongs of fast race track in a breezing 1 : 14. His fractions were :25 and :49?i. The work was properly "messed up" when a boy on another horse pulled him up midway the stretch, effectively standing the HeliopolLs colt still. It was rather a near thing for Mrs. Galbreath s colt. Trainer Ward expressed his satisfaction with the way in which Summer Tan pulled up and cooled out, and added that he has never seemed better than in the last three or four days. Racing Fool Goes Mile Racing Fool, winner of the Blue Grass Stakes, was brought to the course for "a slow mile" the other day and measured the distance in 1:44, well in hand. This is an improving sort of colt and, indeed, many consider him superior to his more renowned stablemate, Flying Fury, winner of last Tuesdays Derby Trial. The Blue Grass was the first stake success of Racing Fools career and the style in which he prevailed suggested there may be others. Trainer Cecil Wilhelm of Harry Warners Honeys Alibi expressed himself as well pleased with the way his charge came out of the Derby Trial, and added that he may be accounted a certain starter in the "Run for the Roses." The colts race in that mile was more commendable than it may appear on paper, as he encountered some difficulty. H. E. Brown announced that Nabesna would be a definite starter in the Derby. This colt perforce pulled up rather sharply midway the stretch run. The son of Stymie is a temperamental animal, nevertheless runs on heartily at the end of his races. Bennie Creech, who used to train Ladys-man. said that Styrunner came out of the Trial whole and healthy and may be up to Continued on Page Forty -Two Ten Derby Candidates Await Call Postward Summer Tan Works Six Furlongs In 1:14; Lucky to Avert Mishap Continued from Page One the Derby, though he was not at all sure , he would be added to the entries. Nick; ! Burger announced quite flatly that Royal I Mon, a development of the Western Plains tracks, will be withheld from the Derby. And E. C. JDobson said his charge Jettj 1 I Flame injured himself in the Trial, turning up sore the next morning. Dobson , could v not immediately put his finger on the seat of the trouble, but is passing up | | the Derby. John W. Clark, who gives Nabesna solici- , tous handling, announced today that John , "Shorty" Adams, the noted stretch rider, will have the mount on his trainee. This would indicate that Nabesna is a sure starter, though he got all the way up this morning only to stand in a whirlpool bath. Friday will be a busy day along the Downs backstretch, as most of the eligibles j j will be called upon for final blowouts for Saturdays history-making ten furlongs. Louisvilles weather has been, in a word, glorious this much of Derby week and each morning finds scores of the towns horse lovers assembled along the backstretch to see the Derby favorites go through their paces. It is abundantly clear, as the date of the ; running nears, that William Woodward, , Jr.s homegrown -Nashua will be a staunch favorite, most likely at odds on, regardless ; of track conditions. The weather forecast prophesies that Friday will be fair and a , bit cooler, with a high of 80. and that the • magic day this week end will be mostly • sunny, and pleasant, with a high in the low 80s. 3
