► 4 iWliiik 1 ; 3 y y. : -. SUMMER TAN — Worked six furlongs in 1:14 breezing, yesterday as his final important drill for tomorrows Derby. Reverberations of Our Babus Win In Two Thousand Guineas Felt Here Rays From Its Spotlight 4 On Turn-to, One of Most Popular Younger Sires By LEON RASMUSSEN Staff Correspondent When earthquakes shake the land, seismographs the world over feel them. And when great turf classics are run, breeders the world over feel them — some feel them positively, some negatively, but none in-diferently. First there is a scanning of pedigrees to see if. perchance, they own a relative to this new star, or his sire, or his dam. Then, with that personal attention out of the way, a more mundane interest takes over. Does this latest classic winner possibly point out a promising new sire, or indicate the re-1 vival of a seemingly moribund line, or em-bcss the strength of an already vital one? i Just the other day the first of the 1955 English classics, the 2000 Guineas at one mile, had its running. The winner was Our Babu. topweight on the English Free : Handicap for two-year-olds in 1954 with 133 pounds, and a son of My Babu, who led the same list in 1947. Th3 reverberations of this race were felt in various places in the United States, but many of the rays from its spotlight fell on Harry Guggenheims Turn-to, the four-! year-"ld son of Royal Charger now standing his first season at stud at Claiborne Farm. It is not as though Turn-to needed any more spotlight. If there is a more popular stallion among the young soon-to-j be-sires, his connections are hiding the facts. Turn-tos High Rating Although Turn-to literally "bowed" out of racing after a brief career of eight races, six cf which he won, he was nevertheless ranked the equal of High Gun and Determine in Daily Racing Forms three-year-old weights compiled by Handicapper Ty Shea on the evidence of three i954 starts, including a Flamingo victory. Eddie Hay-ward, who then trained him, said he was "infinitely the best horse Ive been around." And speaking of the other horses of Turn-tos generation, added, "He would have galloped those horses to death. He was never extended in his 1954 races." Turn-tos obvioas racing class and the esteem in which horsemen held him could not possibly outweigh the vigor and brilliance of his pedigree, now further reflected by the Guineas win of Our Babu. The latter is by My Babu, by Djebel out of Perfume II.. out of Lavendula II. Lavendula is also the dam of Source Sucree, the dam of Turn-to. and her daughter, Perfume II., is also the dam of the stakes winner Say-ani. leading sire in France in 1953 and sire of La Sorellina. winner of the Prix de lArc de Triomphe. In addition, Lavendula is the dam of the French-bred Ambiorix, also standing at Claiborne, and noted as the sire of 1954s best juvenile filly, High Voltage, Full Flight, Allied and other stakes performers. Thus, it is quite a family My Babu, Our Babus sire, and Turn-to have in common on the distaff side. But there is much more to Turn-tos pedigree than just the vitality of Laven-dulas family. His dam, Source Sucree, also foaled Cagire. a major stakes winner in England and now a popular sire there; the stakes filly Mervilla in France, and Wild Orange, Turn-tos year younger sister who showed stakes class in a brief 1954 campaign in this country. Mighty matrons are rather common close 1 up in Turn-tos pedigree. As proud as the name Lavendula is in a pedigree, it still is 1 not near as proud as three others who | appear in Turn-tos. There is Nogara, dam of eight Italian classic winners, including Nearco, the sire of Nasrullah; Mumtaz Mahal, the Aga Khans truly immortal foundation mare, and Plucky Liege, the dam of Sir Gallahad III., Bull Dog, Quatre Bras II., Bois Roussel, among others. While the fruits of incestuous and intense inbreeding may, in the long run, prove more disappointing than profitable, there are many astute breeders who wel-j come the appearance of the same ancestor, if he or she is high-class, in the third and fourth removes. For those who believe this helps to fix and thereby transmit certain desirable characteristics, Turn-to once again is the answer to breeders who are particularly exacting in choosing a mate for their prized matrons. Turn-to is inbred in the third generation to Pharos, who is the sire of Nearco, Turn-tos grandsire, and also the sire of Lavendula, Turn-tos granddam on the distaff side. In respect to inbreeding, Our Babu and Turn-to also have something in common, the full brothers Fairway and Pharos appearing in the third and fourth removes in our Babus family tree. Although Pharos did not bring off a handsome physical appearance, being described as coarse," the son of Phalaris — r capa Flow certainly couldnt be whistled off the course for not passing on genuine quality. He led the French sire list several times and would have been forever remembered if he had done nothing other than sire Nearco.
