Jim Thorpe Purse To Blue Sparkler Woodlawn Farm Homebred in Auspicious Sophomore Debut As Garden State Favorite By FRED GALIANI GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 5. — For the second straight day, Amory Haskells Woodland Farm silks were victorious in the feature race here. This humid afternoon, the chestnut three-year-old filly Blue Sparkier made an auspicious debut, racing the six furlongs in the Jim Thorpe Purse to score by a half length over Darby Dan Farms Windsor King. It was a length and a half back to Mrs. S. M. Pistorios Ellen "s Spy in third position. Blue Sparkler, who had a four for five record last season, was backed into .20 for favoritism and the chalk players in the crowd of 17,685 were well rewarded She covered the distance in 1:11% under her regular pilot Glen Lasswell, Won Three Juvenile Events A homebred daughter of Knave High-Blue Tiara, Blue Sparkler won her first three starts, the last being a victory in the Homebred Stakes at Atlantic City. In the subsequent Wanda Stakes over this course last fall, she was awarded the purse when Blue Banner was disqualified in a roughly run contest. But the wheel of fortune spun the reverse way in her last race of the year, when she had her number taken down in favor of Bunnys Babe in the New Jersey Breeders Stakes. She was retired for the season and did not return to acticn until this afternoon. Away with .her usual burst of speed, Blue Sparkler was held under restraint while Ellens Spy and Alapocas preceded her by a slight margin for the first quarter mile. Alapocas dropped back to third as they neared the far turn, with Ellens Spy still showing the way and Blue Sparkler on the outside of her. Windsor King was last all this while, but gradually made up ground as they went into the turn. Miwday of the turn, Lasswell decided to let Blue Sparkler run and she quickly opened up a commanding lead. Ziggling. who was on the rail, saved a lot of ground and made a menacing rush in mid stretch, but it was short-lived and he quickly dropped out of it. Passing the eighth pole, Lasswell went to the whip on Blue Sparkler, as Windsor King found plenty of racing room between horses when Alapocas went wide. Windsor King closed in on the leader with a tremendous surge, but Lasswell kept the filly going under a hand ride to the wire to hold her rival safe. Windsor Kings late bid had him home sufficiently before Ellens Spy for place.
