Ricci Tavi Opens Sophomore Campaign With Eight-Length Triumph at Pimlico Lungers Preakness Hopeful Has South American, Invicto, Next to Him at End of Dash ! By PALMER HEAGERTY PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 9.— Ricci Tavi, a .three-year-old Rico Monte — Sea Snack homebred from the Christiana Stables of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lunger, launched his current campaign in auspicious fashion here this afternoon when he accounted for the featured six-furlong Calvert Purse by eight lengths in 1:12%, then worked out an additional furlong in 1:26%. Trainer Henry Clark plans to start his three-year-old in the Preakness Prep on Monday and, if the colt shows to advantage, he will earn a position in the field for the eightieth running of the Preakness on Saturday, May 19. „ Behind Ricci Tavi at the end of todays trip was Jose F. Sicardis Argentine-bred Invicto, another Preakness prospect, who nosed out Carolyn K Stables Hi-Sag, the favorite with a crowd of 9,068. Ricci Tavi, in winning his third straight race over this track — he completed his juvenile campaign here with a pair of victories— Continued on Page Forty-Sevan J Ricci Tdvi "Eight-Length Winner in Seasonal Bow Lungers Preakness Hope Trims InvtetOj Hi-Sag at Pimlico Oval Continued from Page One returned .80 and was ridden by Eldon Nelson. Invicto, a stablemate of Prendase, who finished in the runner-up spot behind El Chama in last years Washington, D. C, International, was making the first start of his career and in his native land would not yet be a three-year-old. He was Soundly beaten by Ricci Tavi today but turned in a creditable performance and went out a mile in 1:42%. He broke rather tardily from the number one position and, while he failed to make up ground on the winner through the final furlong, he closed willingly to wear down several shifty . sprinters. Llangollen Farms Restrained was the pacemaker in the Calvert, which probably brought about the defeat of the fainthearted Hi-Sag. The two were on almost even terms after a half mile and both faltered in the late stages, as Ricci Tavi charged from just off the pace to be almost two lengths in front at the furlong pole. Once on the head end, the Christiana colt clearly asserted himself as he drew clear rapidly without need of encouragement fvorh Nelson. While it is almost impossible to determine just how much class the Rico Monte sophomore possesses, the fact remains that in his last two 1955 victories he had Winding Way Farms Golf Ace, a supplemental Preaknessnom-inee at a cost of 500, well behind him. Another Christiana Stakes competitoi", the four-year-old Thinking Cap, made his seasonal bow in the seventh event and finished third behind Giles D. Mills Nick Jimmie and Auburn Farms favored Do Report at six furlongs. The first two were separated by a nose, with Thiiiking Cap, last years Travers and Lawrence Realization, three lengths farther back in 1:11%. Nick Jimmie was ridden by Nick Shuk and returned 0.40 in his first triumph of the year. Thinking Cap, who was given top weight of 126 pounds for Saturdays 0,000 Riggs Handicap, will pass up that event,- according to Clark and will await the 0,000 added Mr. Fitz Handicap on Preakness-eve. The Mr. Fitz will have its inaugural running at a mile and three-sixteenths on the main track.
