Fischbachs Frosty Mr., rank outsider in the field, scoring by a length and oneJialf over Happy Hill Farms Kingmaker, another long shot, in the thirty-fifth running of the 4,150 Chesapeake Stakes [ at Laurel on April 21. C. V. Whitneys Born Mighty was third and Montpeliers Nahodah fourth. Stanley Small was the winning rider. The average daily attendance was 11,510; last year it was 11,650. The daily average betting was 28,890; last years average was 91,026. Laurels mutuel handle this spring was 5,791,128. The highlight of the meeting was the stunning upset victory of Mrs. C. Fish-bachs Forsty Miv in the Chesapeake Stakes, for which he paid 00.80 straight. The winners share of the Chesapeake was 6i825. Adding a second share in another race gave him a total of 7 625. which rnf rf bi"i fhe top "money-winning horse of the meeting. ~~ Ancuier nighlight was last Saturdays running o£. the Laurel Handicap, in which five of the eight-horse field stormed to the finish almost on a line, separated by a nose, a nose, a head and a head by the photo-finish camera. They were, in order, Momus, First Aid, Ocean Lane Momus stablemate , Open Sesame and If abody. Momus share of the 7,275 gross purse was 1,800 and Ocean Lane earned ,500. This 1 to 3 stable coup placed North Downs Farm at the top of the money-winning list with a total of 0,800. Mrs. Fishbach was second on the list with 8,225. Hartack Leads Riders The other two important stakes during j the meeting were the opening-day Capitol i Handicap, won by Boyd Theals Weal or Woe; and the Maryland Sprint Handicap, taken by Mrs. Ben Cohens War Age. Willie Hartack, champion jockey of 1955, ■was the leading rider of the meeting with 16 winners, although he rode on only six . * of the 17 days. I The sad note of the meeting was the injury of jockey Tony DeSpirito, thrown from Folderol in a race on May 1. He suffered, three broken ribs and internal injuries. Surgeons removed his spleen and a kidney. Doctors said he would te sidelined three months or longer and hinted that h.3 may be advised to give up riding. Although incapacitated since May l, DeSpirito wound up fourth in the jockey i standings at the meet behind Hartack, E. I Nelson and S. Small. W, Zakoor was the leading trainer with j nine winners; O. White second with seven.
