Balaklava 1 1. Captures William Penn Boulmetis Aboard Royal Charger Colt Busy Harvest Disqualified From Second and Placed Last; Move Supper Money Up _ By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J.. May 9. — George F. Stricklands Balaklava II., a Royal Charger colt who was bred in Ireland, foaled in England and purchased by his present owner in Florida, this afternoon became the 14th" winner of the William Penn Stakes. The handsome chestnut colt spurted around the leaders in the final stages, despite "shadow jumping" and reacting greenly ito punishment. Sam Boulmetis took the winner in hand to control him near the end, and the colt still was going away with a margin of three lengths. Hunter Lyons Busy Harvest, ridden by Willie Hartack, finished second, but he was disqualified and placed last for bearing in and crowding C. B. Carters Burma Charm midway the turn. Busy Harvest Finishes Second Busy Harvest, a colt who. is blind in his right eye, had finished second by a length and one-quarter oyer R. T. Curleys Supper Money, who was another length in front of F. A. Shermans Olympia Jetr" j In the altered order of finish, official placings gave Supper Money second honors, Olympia Jet was third and Jumping Brook Farms Jumping Brook fourth. Balaklava II., who finished second at Gulfstream Park in his only previous start, was coupled with Jumping Brook as an entry saddled by Tommy Heard Jr. Betting action among the crowd of 21,310 was well divided and the winning entry received a goodly share for a return of 1.80. The skies were clear, but it was on the chilly side. The track was fast and time for the five furlongs was :59. Strickland, who was present to witness the victory of Balaklava II., obtained the colt last winter at a sale at Hialeah. The son of Royal Charger won 00 for finishing second in his only other start, and his portion of the 2,325 William Penn Purse was ,700. Balaklava U. was rather slow leaving the gate and he was riot a serious factor until rounding the stretch turn. Olympia Jet dis-played the most speed in the field of eight youngsters and he held a clear lead through the backstretch, being followed in order by Burma Charm, Supper Money, Busy Harvest and Jumping Brook. Happy Hill Farms Jujitsu ran up behind horses and had to be taken back by Joe Regalbuto near the half-mile pole. Foul Took Place on Turn The foul occurred as a group of four horses were beginning to move after Olympia Jet on the turn. Supper Money was racing on the outside, Busy Harvest next to him and Jumping Brook near the rail. Burma Charm was bumped by Busy Harvest and sandwiched over toward Jumping Brook. Nick Jemas, astride Burma Charm, was almost knocked from the saddle and the colt dropped back to finish last. Busy Harvest, who had finished third in the Gulfstream Park Juvenile Stakes, wrested command Coming through on the inside entering the stretch and appeared ready to draw clear. Boulmetis had Balaklava II. running at full tilt after settling into the stretch, however, and he rushed past Busy Harvest in an instant. Barben Stables gray. Sour Note, ran six furlongs in 1:10% to win the event preceding the stakes by a comfortable three-length margin. Joe Cuimone energetically rode the five-year-old son of First Fiddle from the beginning to shake off Alfred Roberts favored Eastontown, and kept him under pressure as he drew away through the stretch. Sour Note was a close second choice in the betting and paid .00.
