Smash Counterfeit Ring At Fort Miami Course -Seize Paul Carro, Charles Eiffert For Passing, Haying Bogus Bills FORT MIAMI, Maumee, Ohio, May 9. — Counterfeiters, who have been passing bogus ten-dollar bills were apprehended at Fort Miami race track and jailed on Tues- day after an intensive drive was waged by the track operators and Venneth Beard, special agent in charge of the United States Secret Service, working out of the Toledo office. The first bills were found Tuesday morning when Archie Outlaw, money room manager at Fort Miami, noticed them in some of the currency taken in on Monday. Beard, who was immediately notified, urged the track operators to keep the find quiet until he arrived at the track and took over. The sellers were posted with the bogus bill numbers and Joseph E. Kelly, mutuels manager, stationed himself in the vicinity of the sellers windows while Beard covered the entire sellers line. Shortly thereafter another bill was noticed by the money room men. The sharp surveillance brought results when a short time later the seller in number six window recognized one of the bills being passed to him. Kelly immediately notified Beard who nabbed the man, Paul Carro, 82, of Detroit. Carro had four more bills on him when arrested. Beard took Carro to Detroit to the office of William A. Carlson, special agent in charge of the United States Secret Service office there. A search of Carros home revealed several more bills secreted there. Further questioning and through the quality of work on the counterfeit bills the identification of the counterfeiter was determined. A short time later the office of the Secret Service in Detroit had Charles "Paul Eiffert under arrest. When apprehended at his home the agents found 87 bills and the plates as well as printing equipment which was used to make the "bogus" ten-dollar bills.
