Fort Miami Daily Double Of 44.60 High at Meet Lota King and Harjah Make Up Combine; Heavy Rains Hit Track By T. J. MULLIGAN FORT MIAMI, Maumee, Ohio, May 9. The longest-priced Daily Double pay-off at the current meeting was recorded here this dreary afternoon when P. Bayleys Lota King, ridden by jockey R. Faulkner, eked out a head verdict over Thelma Johnsons The Flea in the curtain raiser and Harjah, flaunting the colors of the Clay Hill Stock Farm, and piloted by jockey R. Kurtz, scored an easy victory in the second race to return .40 in the straight mutuels. Harjahs margin of victory was four lengths while Atlee was second, a neck in advance of Royal Incline. The combination of Lota King in the first ancf Harjah in the second paid 44.60. The heavy rains that poured down made the track sloppy and a quartet of horses were withdrav/n during the afternoon. A slim crowd of 1,600, the smallest number of fans to attend the current meeting, were on hand to witness the nine-race program. Redeal, owned by R. Halter, and saddled by E. S. Weidner, won the third event in a thrilling finish to score by two and one-half lengths. Apprentice Bob McEwen kept his mount to the inside along the rail saving ground but the son of Equistone had to beb riskly ridden to hold off the charge of C. L. Crays Lender. The latter was well up with the leaders when he raced extremely wide at the head of the stretch losing a world of ground. He closed rapidly while on the extreme outside, but could not recover sufficiently to get up in time. R. Ductrows Pnut Vendor wound up third in the nine-horse field. Periclean, who races in the partnership of Hodge and Hawkins, may score a surprise victory in Thursdays feature. The bay daughter of Pericles gets in with the feathery impost of 106 pounds and will have the saddle services of Johnny McCracken, who has been riding with considerable success j despite a recent 10-day suspension. He returned to the racing wars yesterday and registered with three winners out of eight races, bringing his total victories to 13 and placing him in third place for riding honors. Periclean has failed to grace the charmed circle to date, but has been lightly campaigned this spring and is fresh and fit. Autmndale looks like the speed of the party, but has been stopping in recent endeavors after displaying a world of early foot. However, he is showing a tendency to go farther in his morning drills and may be a sharp factor. The son of Lord Autumn is owned and conditioned by C. L. Gray. Foot JSecret, who races for P. Guciardo, has one winning effort to his credit here, disappointed in his last few starts,, but may improve enough to annex some portion of the purse. Rounding out the field for Thursdays main event are R. C. La Plantes Ky. Beauty, A. and J. Van Den Boessches Ala-star, J. C. Bunns Pretty Boy, H. Goldens Ardently and E. L. Browns Doctor Ray.
