JEFFORDS STRING POWERFUL Firethorn and Matey Included in Stable of Philadelphian. Firethorn to Be Reserved for Jockey Club Gold Cup Several Promising Juveniles in Band. COLUMBIA, S. C, April 3. What may prove the most powerful stable wintering here is that of Mr. and Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords of Philadelphia which is trained by Preston M. Burch and numbers nineteen head. Nearly half the number are sons or daughters of Man o War, including Matey, one of the more formidable candidates for three-year-old honors.this season. Heading the stable is Firethorn, five-year-old son of Sun Briar Baton Rouge, which spent most of the winter in California, where he went In quest of the Santa Anita Handicap. He did not train well for the worlds richest event and did not get to the .post there. Little has been done with him here because he is to do no racing during the early part of the season, his objective being the Jockey Club Gold Cup in the fall. Firethorn might have won the Gold Cup last autumn, but he was a late withdrawal when it was decided not to take any chances with his infirm leg as long as he was to try for the Santa Anita Handicap. His lone victory in five starts last year was in the Suburban Handicap, in which he nosed "out Granville, but as a three-year-old he was just about second-best to Omaha, with the Jockey Club Gold Cup, Lawrence Realization and other races to his credit. LATE REACHING FORM. Matey, a son of Man o War and Tavy, by St. Germans, came to hand late as a two-year-old and was beaten a nose by Privileged in the Fimlico Futurity, only to be given first money when that colt was disqualified. He wintered well and has progressed smartly in his training here so far, although his first important engagement has been set as the Frcakness Stakes, with the Belmont following. A pair of four-year-olds and a trio of three year-olds comprise the other older horses in the stable. Jean Bart and Indomitable, both by Man o War and winners in fair company last year, are the oldsters, and they seem in good shape for a busy campaign. Jean Bart will be the stables principal dependence for the handicaps, as Indomitable seems a miler at best. The other three-year-olds are Golden Era, a gelding by Golden Broom and Pretty Day dam of Thursday, and two fillies, Rouge et Noir, a daughter of St. Germans and Baton Rouge, and Regal Lily, by Man o War, from Regal Lady. Rouge et Noir is a half sister to Firethorn, and Regal Lily is from the dam of Alcibiades. FILLIES SHOW PROMISE. The fillies out-look the colts among the dozen juveniles and so far theyve shown the most promise in trials. They are by various sires but some of them are from matrons which already have produced well for the Jeffords. Jolly Jack looks and acts well enough to cause his owner to pay greater attention to the potentialities of Boatswain as a sire. He is a member of the second crop of that son of Man o War, which won the Withers five years ago. When the stable leaves here within a few weeks it will go to Maryland, moving on to New York after the Preakness. Harry Richards will report from California soon to do the riding and while here will assist in the training of Pompoon, for which he has been engaged to ride in the Derby. Two-year-olds being trained by Burch are: Skagerrak, ch. c, by St. Germans-Light Ship; Mon Doit, b. g, by Mars Insignia II.; Sudanese, ch. g, by Mars Sudina; Jolly Tar, ch. c, by Man o War Tavy; Jolly Jack; br. c, by Boatswain Beatitude; Martial Air, br. f, by Man o War Baton; My Lady Fair, ch. f, by Man o War Regal Lady; Fine as Silk, ch. f, by Man o War Good as Gold; Rambler Rose, br. f, by Man o . War Lady Rosemary; Creole Maid, br. f, by Pharamond II. Baton Rouge; Soigne, b. f, by Wise Counsellor Ship Shape; God Speed, br. f, by St. Germans Allez Vite.
