RANKING AMERICAN STUD The Claiborne Stud of Arthur B. Hancock, leading American breeder in 1935 and 1936, located at Paris, Ky., is the most extensive thoroughbred nursery in the United States, in scope reminiscent of the Rancho del Paso Stud of James B. Haggin, in the early years of the current century. There are eleven sires standing at Claiborne, headed by Blenheim, followed by Sir Gallahad III., and his son, Gallant Fox. Blenheim stands privately, Sir Gallahad III. and his great son at ,500, and then come Stimulus, Diavolo and Reigh Count at 00 each, followed by Alcazar, Jacopo, Hard Tack and Gallant Sir at 50 each, while Sir Andrew, whose racing career was confined to England, stands at 50. No nominations, of course, are possible to Blenheim, and the books of Sir Gallahad III., Gallant Fox, Stimulus and Hard Tack are already full. Mr. Hancock also maintains an exceptionally fine stud near Charlottesville, Va., known as the Ellerslie Stud, where his father, the late Capt. R. J. Hancock, began breeding horses in 1877. At Ellerslie are standing Pompey, whose book is full at 50, and Petee-Wrack and The Scout, the fees of which are 50 each.
