JAKE LOWENSTEINS HORSES Nine of Fifteen Training at Churchill Downs Are Promising Two-Year-Olds. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 3. As nine of the fifteen horses being trained here at Churchill Downs by Jake " Lowenstein are two-year-olds, that able Chicago turfman is having no trouble assigning his time these spring mornings. In fact, Lowenstein has been one of the busier trainers at the Winn course since mid-February and, while the demeanor and evident advanced condition of his horses indicate much progress since the thoroughbreds were taken up six weeks ago, quite a bit of preening, education and conditioning remains to have the entire string in racing swing when the bugle sounds in the Blue Grass. For Morris Vehon, wealthy retired manufacturer of Chicago, Lowenstein is "prep-ping" seven juveniles and the older Ivory Tip, a Derby nominee, and Threadneedle. Two of the six others, all owned by Lowenstein and his wife, are in their first racing year also. DERBY GRUELLING RACE. Right now, Lowenstein does not consider Ivory Tip of sufficient quality to get into such a gruelling contest as the coming Kentucky Derby promises to be, but the youngsters, particularly several in the Vehon end of the stable, "well, there might be a good one or two among them," if you want to know what Lowenstein thinks about them. Old Sun Captor, dean of the stable; the useful filly, Lady Montrose, Miss Lily and Two Sons make up the older side of Lowen-steins end of the establishment.
