HORSES MOVING TOWARD AURORA TRACK Stable Room at Fox Valley Track Greatly Increased Over Previous Years A. G. Tarns String Among First to Register for Coming Meeting AURORA, 111., April 3. One thousand and one horses have started their move on the Aurora race track. It may sound like a gag, but there is exactly that number of stalls at the Fox Valley track and indications are there will be 1,001 horses there when the inaugural meeting of the 1937 Illinois racing season gets under way on May 1. An actual count of stalls at Aurora made this week revealed that, after additional room had been created for the thoroughbred colony, there are- now accommodations for more horses there than ever before. But there arent 1,001 empty stalls there now, for though the nineteen-day meeting is still nearly four weeks away, some hundred horses have already arrived on the grounds and will start training moves in preparation for the opening. The early arrivals came, for the most part, from the New Orleans tracks, and this week will find more than that number shipping in from Miamis Tropical Park and Hot Springs Oaklawn Park, both of which close for the season. By mid-April it is expected that nearly half the 1,001 stalls will have occupants and practically all the remainder will be reserved. PRIZE WINNING STABLE. Among the very first to check in was the extensive stable of A. G. Tarn, which ranked tenth in the nation last year in the very important matter of winning purse money. Led by Rushaway, the purple and white Tarn colors were victorious seventy-six times for total winnings of 3,377. All told, trainer Tarn saddled eighty-nine winners, a mark which ranked him third in the national standings. Racing secretary Dick Leigh, who will again draw up the programs for the Aurora meeting, is due to arrive here Monday and will have a finished draft of the first issue of the condition books with him. Mr. Leigh comes to Aurora from New Orleans by way of Hot Springs where he took reservations for stall space and entries for the 2,000 added Illinois Derby which will be run the final day of the meeting, Saturday, May 22. General manager Robert S. Eddy, Jr. with other Aurora officials is expected to arrive later in the week and take personal charge of activities at the track. Track superintendent Placido Frigerio hopes to have the speeded-up racing surface ready for horses to work over in the near future.
