BERNARD F. BEATS PAR Captures Tropical Park Special in Thrilling Stretch Duel. Pair Fight It Out Courageously During Final Five-Sixteenths : E. Arcaro Scores Triple, j- MIAMI, Fla., April 3. Establishing a swift pace for nine furlongs after going into the lead with the ring of the bell, Bernard F., racing for the Kentucky patron, I. J. Collins, achieved his most important victory as a three-year-old when he administered defeat to the best three-year-olds which could be mustered in the Tropical Park Special, worth exactly 53,800, and which climaxed a brilliant racing season at Tropical Park Saturday. Meeting contention from three others the feature attraction, despite the small quota of starters, was one which kept the crowd on edge and developed into one of the best finishes in any other running when the winning gelding and Par, from the H. W. Jackson stable, waged a long thrilling battle for almost five-sixteenths of a mile to come to the finish separated by a short head. Mae-cloud was third for Maemere Farm, while Robber Baron, the only other starter and non-winner, was a distant trailer. SHORT DELAY AT START. There was a short delay before the start for the feature was obtained and the four were away in good order, with Bernard F., from his inside berth, particularly alert and able to go into command immediately. Going to the turn in full stride, Robber Baron, slipping through on the inside, gave chase, while Par and Maecloud were heads apart and right with the leaders. Through the run down the far side of the course Robber Baron soon became distressed as Bernard F. went into a lead of two lengths and, with the L. Rosenberg colt finished, Par and Maecloud were bunched to offer the Collins gelding contention as he established the pace. Bernard F. was saving much ground as he continued on the front end, and W. D. Wright was giving the son of Sun God II. every opportunity to gain a second breath. With the stretch reached, Par and Maecloud both shortened some of the margin enjoyed by the Collins three-year-old, and as they closed in, a thrilling battle took place in the last stages, and there was doubt until the end as to which would prevail. With the camera inspected for a definite decision, the climax had come with Par, favored for the feature, awarded only second honors. Maer cloud was beaten two and one-half lengths by the leading pair, while Robber Baron was beaten a wide margin. The distance was covered in 1:51. IDEAL CLOSING DAY. The curtain of the long season of ninety-six days was rung down in a blaze of glory, weather conditions being ideal for the entertainment, while a largo assemblage, speculatively inclined, kept the "tote" machines humming briskly all through the eight races. The Viscaya Stakes, a four furlongs test for juveniles, that was the co-feature of the day, was robbed of much of its color when Remarkable, well-backed choice for the ,500 added prize, was the victim of sloughing immediately after the start, which killed his chances. In this a half dozen youngsters, the best that could be mustered, met for honors and, after the Aeolian color-bearer was almost knocked down after the start, the race developed into an uninteresting contest in which Family Friend, racing coupled with Bold Turk for the Paragon -Stable, was an easy winner of the test, that was worth ,085. Dark War, shifty sprinter of the Cosgrave stable, became the first four-time winner of the meeting, when she turned in a front-running and popular victory, to account for the first race at six furlongs. Ruling at 2 to 5, and beginning with her customary speed, the seven-year-old mare never left the result in doubt to win by a clear margin under the handling of E. Arcaro, disposing of Grand Jester, after the Mrs. E. D. Jacobs sprinter offered the pursuit to the turn out of the back stretch. UTSET IN SECOND. An upset marked the decision of the second event, which was fashioned for sprinter platers, when Bristle, from the E. T. Burke barn, drove to an easy victory at six furlongs. Ridden by jockey H. Le Blanc for that riders twenty-fourth victory of the meeting and one that broke a tie with jockey W. D. Wright for a valuable prize, the four-year-old son of Display showed a great turn of speed, to come from seventh position and sweep to finish with a margin of six lengths. At the close El Bandido captured a nose decision over Out of Step for the place award, while the others finished in strung-out order, with Prince Comixa and Johnny Bane, the early leaders, last of the ten under colors. Stepping to the front immediately with the start of the third race, Journey On, a stanchly supported choice, graduated from the maiden ranks when he bore the silks of the Branncastlc Farm to a hard-earned success. His triumph, culminating in a thrilling finish, took place at the expense of Fried-berg and Axtons Tobacco Buyer, while in a close fit for third, Phillips Pete, after a rough trip, gained that share of the spoils over Bold General. Jockey A. Cooper had the mount oh the winning son of Challenger II., and his strong finish was in a measure responsible for the score that was accomplished by a short head. In landing the place Tobacco Buyer was out a length and a half before Phillips Pete, while Bold General was just before Ubald G. The Class "C" Handicap, which was fourth on the program, provided a thrilling finish when Marson, Joyride and Black River came the end closely lapped that, the camera was called to decide the placing which w?s made in the above order. The stirring stretch duel between the first three was in-Itrumntal in having them five lengths before Nad and four others as the finish line was crossed. Marson flashed nice speed to negotiate the six furlongs in 1:10 hx ,
