Scotch Bim May Prove Repeater at Hazel Park Cbntroyersity Also HasVictory To Her Credit Last Ti me Out By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent HAZEL PARK, Mich., Aug. 20. The Golden Man Purse, a one mile and one-sixteenth condition race for three-year-olds and older, is the headline attraction on a well-balanced program scheduled for tomorrow "at this suburban Detroit racing grounds. The middle distance test drew an overnight field of seven seasoned performers and Scotch Bim, who carries the livery of Hazel Parks president, Richard A. Connell, is the early favorite. Scotch Bim, an eight-year-old stallion, the get of Blue Larkspur or Bimelech and out of the one-time speedy race mare, Clonaslee, was a double winner at Monmouth Park before his transfer to the Motor City and he also finished a close second to Bases Loaded in a mile and onersixteenth test at the New Jersey course. In his only start at the present Hazel Park session, the Connell colorbearer defeated Blen Sand, Thistle War, Attention Sir, Grand Egyptian and Dollys Rocket. Under the allowance terms of the Golden Man, Scotch Bim drew 120 pounds but the Continued on Page Forty-Four Scotch Bim May Prove Repeater at Hazel Park Controversity Also Has Victory To Her Credit Last Time Out Continued from Page One apprentice allowance was claimed by trainer Joe Camac and young but capable Don Holmes, leading reinsman at Hazel Park, probably will be at the reins. Major opposition for Scotch Bim undoubtedly will be furnished by Mrs. George C. Whites Tennessee-owned Controversity, a four-year-old Contradiction-sired filly, pegged at 109 pounds. The White representative gave an unusually sharp effort here last week, trimming a quick field in the three-quarters mile Daily Racing Form Purse while shouldering 112 pounds. Completing the Golden Man likely starting band will be I. Elizaldes Well Met, 114; George Bills, Jr.s Papa Felix, 117; Mrs. L. Seafert and Mrs. P. Lutes Golden Pelt, 106; Thomas McDermotts Bills Hygro, 111, and K. M. Littles The Stinger, 114 pounds. The latter entrant, a fair class winner at the Detroit Race Course, is a homebred four-year-old gelding, the get of War Jeep and Stimulus Fay. Jockey Lois Cook, who led the riders at the 1953 MRA meeting, will return to the saddle tomorrow after serving a 10 days rough riding suspension and he will have the mount on Well Met. Willie Cox is to guide Golden Pelt and Norman Bernardo will be astride The Stinger. No jockeys had been named at a. late hour today for Papa Felix and Bills Hygro. The Golden Man Purse is named in honor of George Krehbiels good stallion, Golden Man, who raced with popularity and success on Michigan and Kentucky tracks. Golden Man, a good class winner of several major engagements, won 23 races and earned approximately 5,000. The Kreh-biel thoroughbred now stands in Lexington, Kentucky at Jack Welchs Whileaway Farm and one of his offspring, Golden Mommy, whose dam is the stake producer, Treasury Key, will be a starter here tomorrow in the initial event. In the meantime at Hazel Park, spectator interest is turning to the nine-race Saturday program, which will co-feature the ,500 Great Lakes Handicap at six and one-half furlongs, and the ,000 Lake St. Claire Purse at one mile and one-sixteenth. Expected to answer "Boots and Saddles" for the Great Lakes are Starboard Stables Bated Breath, victress in the Speed Burners Handicap last week end; Jerry Lynchs Lonoke Flash, Saginaw Stables Badger, Mrs. Charles O. Schweitzers Radical, and the Marion H. VanBerg pair, Chic Wave and Whiff enpoof, among others. There is a possibility -that Springbrook Farms stakes-winner, Pur Sang, will return to action in the Great Lakes. Pur Sang needs no introduction to local patrons for it was at Hazel Park that he took the measure of Clarence Hartwicks Sickles Image during the 1950 season. Chic Wave and G. Y.Bookers Mad Hare, the latter an almost certain Lake St. Claire starter, visited the fast track- here this morning for trials. Chic Wave was not asked for high speed while breezing four furlongs in :49, and Mad Hare stepped five furlongs in 1:02, handily. The Booker stars fractions were the quarter mile , in .24, three furlongs in :36 and she passed the half mile marker in :48. i Post time on week days at Hazel Park is set at 3:30 p. m., while the Saturday and, holiday programs get under way at 2jQfl p. m.
