Three Jockeys Battling For Dade Riding Honors Reynolds, Lucas and Fernandez - In Spotlight at Kentucky Track DADE PARK, Henderson, Ky Aug. 20. For many years Dade Park has been noted as a developing ground for young reinsmen and while there has not been an outstanding apprentice developed here so far this season, -the boys who ride without the five-pound allowance are taking the play away from the novices. Throughout the current session the battle for leading rider has been between W. D. Lucas, Rollie Reynolds and J. C. Fernandez, the Cuban reinsman, who has been in action at this track the past few seasons. One of the three has been in front so far and through the racing of Wednesday, Reynolds grasped the lead from Lucas. Reynolds, an 18-year-old youth, from Louisville, who recently lost his five-pound-apprentice allowance held the reins on a pair of winners in the midweek racing and ran his total wins to 12. The two successes placed the Louisvillian one in front of Lucas, three before Fernandez and four ahead of Norman Hart. While Reynolds, Lucas and Fernandez have been showing the way to the 1953 championship, little notice has been taken of Hart but that youngster who rode here last season with, the apprentice allowance, is inching his way to the leaders and his pair of victories Wednesday makes him a threat to the leaders during the last half of the season. Each summer an apprentice has been developed here, who either won top honors or was close to the lead at the end of the season but a good young prospect has been absent during the early part of the session, giving- the older riders may more opportunities. "Most prominent of the younger saddle-smiths are W. Hubbard, J. Clifton, E. Wallace and W. Hasher but none of them has come close to the feats of other apprentices who accepted mounts- at this track in previous seasons. Through the Wednesday racing, Hubbard was topping the other apprentices but his three victories place him too far behind the veterans to warrant his gaining this years championship. , 1 o
