Del Mar Officials Announce Substantial Increase in Purses DEL MAR, Calif ., Aug. 20. A substantial increase in purses for the balance of the current meeting was announced today by Alfred Hart, president of the Del Mar Turf Club. The seaside course will offer 2,000 in daily purse distribution, exclusive of stakes, effective at once. There is no planned increase in the stakes still to be presented at Del Mar for the remainder . of the season. The raise in distribution is being offered in view of the rise in business being enjoyed by Del Mar and the wish of the management to share this increase with horsemen for the remaining days of the meeting, in lieu of sharp purse additions the final week. It is planned to raise the minimum purse to ,000, with four of these being offered daily. There will be one race at ,500, one at ,000, one at ,000, and a daily feature of ,500. This purse increase is 50 per cent more than offered at the 1952 meeting and 33 1-3 per cent greater than the purses given for the first half of the current season.
