Campbell Returning to Bowie In Racing Secretarys Post BOWIE, Md Aug. 20. The full board of directors of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Association, which operates Bowie race course, met at Saratoga recently to complete plans for the fall meeting which opens November 18 and runs through 16 racing days to December 5. This morning, president Donald C. Lillis stated: "I am very happy to be able to say that John Banks Campbell has agreed to return to Bowie this fall as our racing secretary. To have a man of Mr. Campbells stature in racing working with our director of racing, Ty Shea, assures a first class meeting." Campbell, who has ben the top man in New York racing since 1935, was racing secretary at Bowie when the course opened in 1914 and he has been back many times since. Campbell and Shea are already working together designing the condition books and the list of stakes that will highlight the meeting. "Another announcement that gives me genuine pleasure," went on Lillis, "is that M. Hampton Magruder, who may rightly be considered the father of modern Maryland racing, has consented to serve as a director on our board. I am sure Mr. Magruders long experience and knowledge will be of inestimable value to us."
