Ted Atkinson Suffers Spinal Injury; Sidelined Least Month SARATOGA, Saratoga Springs, N. Y., Aug. 20. Jockey Ted Atkinson suffered a spinal injury when thrown from Alfred G. Vanderbilts Hail Fellow in the post parade before yesterdays fifth race. Atkinson remounted Hail Fellow and finished second, though the colt appeared to stumble and swerve in the stretch, then rode two more mounts, winning the seventh race. The veteran was in pain last night and this morning, however, and X-rays were ordered by Dr. John A. Esposito and Dr. Alexander P. Kaye was called into consultation. The Jockeys Guild physician diagnosed the injury as a fracture of the spinus "process and said that Atkinson would be unable to ride for a month or two and he may not be able to pilot Tom Fool in the Sysonby Mile on September 26, in which the Greentree champion is scheduled to meet Native Dancer. The physicians said that three vertebrae were involved, in the fracture. Atkinson has been replaced by Bennie Green on Greentree Stables One Hitter in Saturdays Saratoga Handicap. Yesterdays was the third disabling injury suffered by the popular jockey this year. On March 13, Ballinclea dropped dead under Atkinson at Gulfstream Park and the jockey landed on his head, suffering a concussion that kept him on the sidelines for several weeks. Then, on July 3, the mare Dollar Belle bolted in the post parade and impaled herself on the fence, sending Atkinson flying some 15 feet in the air. The veteran suffered bruises that later caused, him to miss a few days riding shortly before the current Spa meeting.
