Demand FromCustomsOff icials LOS ANGELES, Calif., Aug. 20. Owners of the Alberta Ranches, Ltd. have received a demand from customs officials that they show cause why a penalty claim of some 8,000, reportedly based on a purchase price of 6,000, plus agents fees, paid for two thoroughbreds imported from the Antipodes, should not be collected. Ardene Boiler, attorney for the Alberta Ranches syndicate, is reported studying the governments claim for customs taxes on the horses Consider n., who was obtained in Australia, and Wandering Ways II., who was purchased in New Zealand. It is reported that the United States Department of Agriculture has granted certificates of pure pedigree on the two horses and the-owners contend that under these circumstances, the animals should be allowed to enter the United States free of taxes.
