Sun Shower Tallies Upset in Beverwyck Takes Measure of His Boots And Ben Tally-Ho; Favored Sundowner Goes Down Early SARATOGA, Saratoga Springs, N. Y., Aug. 20. Mrs. Vernon G. Cardys Canadian-owned Sun Shower won the 54th running of the Beverwyck .Steeplechase Handicap here today by two and a quarter lengths from Brookmeade Stables His Boots,, while L. H. Nelles Extra Points was two lengths farther back and a length-and a half before F. Ambrose Clarks Ben Tally-Ho, the only other starter to finish. Pat Smithwick rode Sun Shower, who had caused a surprise here in winning the Shillelah, then finished far back in the North American Chase. The six-year-old son of Easton Sun Fritters, "who was purchased from Rigan McKinney for ,800 in June, earned ,000 today and rewarded his supporters with a liberal 7.20. Sun Shower ran and jumped about two miles in 4:09 over an extremely hard track, just a second slower than Pontius Pilates track, record. Mighty Mo and Virginius were scratched because of the hard track, while the only , other starter was James F. TMcHughs Sundowner, the odds-on choice. Sundowner gave Earl Phelps a ride he will probably remember in his dreams for weeks to come. The Annapolis gelding, who was the star of the McKinney sale at 5,000, was extremely rank at every fence, after running away a considerable distance before the start, and eventually dislodged Phelps at the second fence in thebackstretch. Phelps, who escrped injury said that it was impossible to control the horse. Leads Despite Reckless Fencing Sundowner led, despite his reckless fencing, until he went down, but was obviously tiring from his unnecessary exertions and would probably have finished last if he had stayed on his feet. Sun Shower forced the favorites pace most of the way, but was headed for a few strides near the far turn by Extra Points, while His Boots and Ben Tally-Ho were not far away. When Sundowner went down, Sun Shower promptly took command and outfinished His Boots and Extra Points, who made a race of it to the final yards.-Ben Tally-Ho fenced well, but appeared slightly outclassed. The winner is a full brother to Sun Bath, who won the North American, Beverwyck and Saratoga chases here in 1947 for Rob-ebrt Grant, another Canadian. Herbert C. Boorses G. R. Petersen nosed out Warbern Stables Sickles Sound in the Plattsburg Purse, best of the flat events, holding his rival safe after appearing certain to be beaten at the furlong pole. George Cardoza was considerably more help to G. R. Petersen in the final phase of this mile and a furlong than Augustine Catalano was to Sickles Sound, who was trying to lug in. C. V. Whitneys Mameluke, who had been on the sidelines since last November, made a promising return to the races jto be third, beaten another two lengths, and a length and a half before Elmendorf s Alls Fair. The Ogden Phipps entry of Ancestor and Bassanio were favored by the crowd of 13,967 in the Plattsburg. Ancestor made a valiant effort to get the early lead, despite appearing lame in the post parade, while Bassanio trailed all the way and refused to respond to Bennie Greens urging at any stage of the journey. G. R. Petersen paid .10 as second choice and required 1:53 for the line furlongs. M. F. Drinkhouses Wedding Band and Tinkam Veale H.s Prince Henry compiled the largest Daily Double pay-off of the meeting, returning 22.80 after winning the first two sprints by daylight. Apprentice James Cangemie rode Wedding Band, who paid 5.50, while Ovie Scurlock piloted Prince Henry, a three-year-old first-time starter by War Admiral from Royal Robes. Prince Henry was well-supported on the strength of goods looks and better trials, paying .80.
