The Pie King Easily Wins Gimcrack Stakes Ray Bell and Ellwood Johnston To Be Honored at English Dinner By VERNON MORGAN Reuters Turf Editor YORK, England, Aug. 20. Former rodea rider, Ray Bell, of California, today won the Gimcrack Stakes for the second time in three years when his colt, The Pie King, won this juvenile fixture here this afternoon. The Pie King, named after Americas famous "pie king" Ellwood B. Johnston, who is part owner with Bell of this speedy youngster, was ridden to an easy four lengths victory by Britains champion jockey, Sir Gordon Richards. The crack son of The Solicitor and Whirling Dun, who was winning his fourth successive race, is trained in County Kildare, Eire, by Paddy Prendergast. Starting at odds of l-to-3 and while carrying 125 pounds, The Pie King covered the six furlongs in 1:12, leaving his eight opponents well beaten. By emulating the feat of Windy City n. two years ago, the victor won the sum. of ,000 making his total earnings just over 1,000. Ray Bell, who said he came over from the United States with Mr. Johnston specially to see the colt perform, said "We are thrilled by The Pie Kings performance. Either my partner or I will certainly come over for the Gimcrack dinner here in December and one of us will make the speech. The Pie Kings next race will be at Garden State Park in the Futurity, which is the richest juvenile prize in the world." Ellwood Johnston said he hoped to follow up the colts victory by winning the Del Mar Derby in America on Saturday with his filly Smart Barbara. Bell and Johnston in addition to being the guests of honor at the dinner in the Gimcrack Club, which is the second oldest in the world, also have the privilege of paying for the wine. In return they can speak their minds on problems and politics of the turf. Coronation knight, Sir Gordon Richards, who was riding his sixth Gimcrack winner, had The Pie King away smartly. He has always moved like a winner and had no difficulty drawing away from his nearest rival, Orthopaedic, in the last furlong.
