Field of Seven in Good Goods Purse Fillies and Mares In Spotlight Today Sally Catbird Looms Choice Over Spirit Away, Tuonine In Washington Park Sprint WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, HI., Aug. 20. A fleet band of fillies and mares, most of Whom are eligible for the 5,000 added Beverly Handicap, will get their final public preps for that important event when they clash in the Good Goods Purse, a six-furlong dash that headlines Fridays well-balanced program at Washington Park. The Beverly, fashioned exclusively for members of the so-called weaker sex, is to be -decided next Wednesday at one mile, and the Good Goods Purse will have a definite bearing on the size of the field. Those entered in the Good Goods are C. M. Grahams Wabash Moon, Cresson Farms Diane B., R. de Legorburus Gold Cup HLt Clifford Lusskys Tuonine, Harry Allsmanf Spirit Away, Reverie Knoll Farms Flyamanita and Louis Lee Haggin n.s Sally Catbird. Looming as probable favorite in the field is Sally Catbird, an improved miss of fashionable breeding. The three-year-old daughter of Alibhai On the Level, by Sickle, showed her best race to date, even though she had previously won a quartet of races, over the Washington Park course on August 7. On that occasion she met some of the best of her sex on the grounds, including Good Call, Fulvous, Mimi Mine, Spirit Away and Cherry Flame. The filly was rated nicely in back of a fast early pace, took the lead in the stretch and appeared the winner untilsuccumbing to Good Calls belated bid. Steve Brooks has been given the riding assignment on Sally Catbird and she will carry 110 pounds. Spotty Races This Season Spirit Aways races this season have been somewhat spotty, but she comes off a fine effort, one that, repeated, would make her a powerful factor. An August 14 she stepped to the front shortly after the start and led all the way, winning by a margin of two lengths against Belle Rebelle, Ama-bala, Honey Please, Sally Catbird and Tuonine. It may be that Sally Catbird did not fancy the "off" condition of the course that day. Tuonine is ..nother who was beaten by Spirit Away when, they last met, but who is believed to be a considerably better racer than the race indicated. She was a stakes winner at Washington Park last season, but has never quite returned to. that form this year. Johnny Heckmann will be in the saddle. Flyamanita has been a favorite with middle-western turfites for several seasonC Before arriving here she had been "campaigned in Kentucky, New York and New Jersey; where her races have been both good and bad. However, she has always fancied the Washington Park course. On August 6, she gave a good demonstration of speed by finishing second to Gala Fete and beating Lead Bye, Model Quest, Gold Cup HE., Well Worth It, Pampas Beauty and Dixie Flyer in a six-furlong sprint that was run in 1:10. Flyamanita appears well suited to the conditions of the Good Goods. The fact that Gerald Porch will be in the saddle for the first time in many months also adds to her chances. Porch was seriously injured in a spill last winter in Florida, and did not return to activity until the current Washington Park meeting opened. He is the regular Reverie Knoll pilot and has ridden Flyamanita in most of her best performances. Gold Cup HI. is an imported filly who has been working well and may develop into a good competitor. In her first outing here she was in rather close quarters. Diane B. is the lightweight of the race and will be .ridden by Adams, Jr. She will carry 101 and has some good" races to her credit. Wabash Moon will be piloted by Eldon Nelson.
