J U D G ES STAND Br CHARLES mtton WASHINGTON PARK, Home-wood, 111., Aug. 27. The Princess Pat developed one of the longest, most stirring, nod-for-nod stretch battles of the season, with Queen Hopeful eventually getting the better of Chorus Khal. The Californian dug in grimly when the Reuben filly challenged, and for five-sixteenths of a mile they really brought down the house. But Chorus Khals assailant would not be denied and was the better part of a length in front at the line. We do not know if Queen Hopeful is the best two-year-old filly, but they do not come more courageous, and she is an interesting rival for Mrs. George Wideners lovely Evening Out. Queen Hopeful beat Miz Clementine an unyielding nose for the Lassie and ran Greek Lady to a dead heat in the Mademoiselle. This latter filly, incidentally, stumbled twice for the first 30 yards of the Princess Pat. The midweek thriller was Queen Hopefuls most distinguishing performance, for she broke from number 15, which would defeat most horses, nevertheless had the dash to gain contention and the stoutness to then produce a beautiful stretch run. The dusky, ,800 daughter of Roman has earned 55,423 and is just 3,578 away from Top Flights record earnings for a two-year-old filly. Indications are that she now will journey East, where she is in the Matron, Pimlico Futurity and Selima. The Matron may place her versus the unbeaten Evening Out and afford her the opportunity of wresting the title from the daughter of Shut Out. The Erdenheim filly is an appreciably larger mare, if that means anything, and one always wonders if the Romans will stay middle distances. But "The Aly" Reubens filly has a lot of sheer zip. Some dockers caught her in 1:10 in the Princess Pat. It is possible, by the way, that Beanir would have been a factor except for trying to get out on the turn, and that Clear Queen Hopeful Proves Best in Midwest Reuben Holds Strong Hand in Futurity Dancer Lost Best Race Bill Winfrey Arab Actress Heads Beverly Prospects Dawn would have been closer, only for being backed out of a jam that never fully materialized at the far corner. The Princess Pat was the eighth stakes success at Arlington and Washington for the Toledo financial advisor and sportsman, and the twelfth of the year. The Reubens have been in racing only six years, now rank third to Vanderbilt and Calumet on the 1953 money winning list AAA Reuben hardly can help feeling he has an excellent chance of adding the Washington Park Futurity to his remarkable skein of stakes successs at Ben Lind-heimers meetings. His Sea O Erin, winner of the Prairie State, and the Arlington Futurity winner, Hasty Road, both are eligible. Though Hasty Road was third to his stablemate in the Prairie State, his performance was fully as satisfying, as this observer saw it. He had a well-nigh impossible post position, breaking from number 18, was in rather close, sustained a cut on one hind leg, and perforce lost more ground than the margin by which he was beaten. In other words, if you thought him the smartest of the two-year-olds before the race, there is no reason yet to think otherwise. The blaze-faced son of Roman and Traffic Court, incidentally, is a, bit larger than any of his rivals out here, runs without blinkers, and Eddie Arcaro apparently can take him anywhere in a big field. Sea O Erin is himself far "better than an empty stall." He is perhaps the nimblest runner the Australian sire, Shannon n., has yet sent to the races. Arid he is out of the Hyperion mare, Chantress, so that he is unlikely to step on his pedigree. Chantress is the dam of Saggy. As we recall, Reuben purchased Sea O Erin privately from his breeder, Miss Mildred Woolwine. AAA Funnily enough Bill Winfrey considers the one race in which Native Dancer has been beaten to have been his best performance. This was in the Kentucky Derby, as the youngest TV fan is aware. "As far as I am concerned, he is unbeaten," Winfrey remarked. "The tremendous way he finished that day convinced me he would go on. And I wonder if there is any horse, even Tom Fool, who can stand him off." Indications are that both horses will appear next in the Sysonby Mile, sharpening their speed especially for this, epic encounter. The writer took occasion to study Native Dancer at some length when he was here. It is easy to see the source of his 26-foot stride. He has extraordinary length from hip to hock, which comes to a great deal of leverage. The development of his gaskins, stifle and the muscular investiture on the inside of the hind leg borders on the abnormal, and he is perhaps the widest horse in training across the hips. His croup slopes a bit like a sprinters, and we suspect this and the scope of his quarters inclined many who saw him last spring to question- he would stay. In this connection, we recall that it was said Man o War also was "muscled like a sprinter." The present three-year-old champion is 16.1 and is larger than Citation, to whom he is so often being compared. We think that Winfrey will be pleased if only he runs "big" as Citation did when he meets older rivals in the fall classics. AAA The Beverly of 5,000 added at a flat mile here on Wednesday next promises a first rate filly-and-mare race, though Real Delight has bowed and is to, be bred next spring. The eligibles for this final filly feature of the Arlington and Washington season include a lively three-year-old in Arab Actress and a resolute stretch-runner in Continued on Page Thirty-Nine JUDGES STAND By CHARLES HATTON Continued from Page Forty-Eight the older Bella Figura. Not to mention such as Cerise Reine, Sunny Dale, Dixie Flyer, Aesthete and Lilly Valenti. Arab Actress is a local heroine, having accounted for both the Cleopatra and the Misty Isle. She ventured East, to Grecian Queens "orbit, for the Monmouth Oaks and was all but run over when the Whitaker filly moved. But nobodys filly is beating Grecian Queen these days. Arab Actress Chicago form is encouraging at the C. V. Whitney farm near Lexington, for she is the first performer of importance credited to the young sire, Burg-El-Arab, who was unbeaten in three starts in a brief career. Turf ana: Mark-Ye-Well ran on a bar plate the other day. . . . The Beverly eligible, Miss Traffic, is a half-sister to Hasty Road. . . . Tuscany, winner refcently of a division of Atlantic Citys Boardwalk, may be a starter in the 00,000 Washington Park Handicap. . . . High Scuds recent 1:34 was the busiest mile of the meeting. . . . Jimmy Jones declares he is going to see The Dancer vs. Tom Fool even if he has to fly his own place in from California. . . . Arcaros ankle was lanced just before the Derby and he rode the race with it packed in cotton gauze, tape and a special cellophane wrapper. . . . Miss Marj Lind-heimer is resting, pending reports of her recent extensive checkup; . . . Irelands president this year is racing a stakes winning two-year-old filly, Gorm Anna, who is by Sayani, out of a mare by our Mah-moud.
