Photo Finishes7 At Rockingham DeSpirito Top Rider, 31 Wins To 30 for Madden; Robertson Stable Leader With 3,660 "Photo finishes" prevailed and featured the 24-day summer session at Rockingham Park which concluded last Saturday with attendance and pari-mutuel play showing appreciable gains over the corresponding meeting at the one mile Salem, N. H., rac- ing plant. Tony DeSpirito, last years king of the jockeys, again landed atop the riders "race," but little Anthony encountered a tough time attaining the laurels over Dar- rell Madden, a persistent pursuer through- out the meet. When the finai tabulations went into the record books, DeSpirito held only a one-winner margin over Madden, 31 victories to 30. However, DeSpiritos 31 winning mounts came out of 102 tries to Mad-dens 150 acceptances. This, of course, gave the 1952 riding champion a neat percentage of- .30, far and away the best mark as far as averages were concerned. Mad-dens percentage was .20. Mrs. A. C. Robertson managed to nose out O. L. Foster for leading owner honors by a scant 0. Mrs. Robertsons charges won six races, ran second a like number of times and finished third on five occasions to earn 3,660. Fosters stable added 3,600 to his bankroll with two victories, one second and two show awards. Moreover, H. A. Kimball was a bang-up third with 3,375. "The Rocks" overall attendance totaled 289,565 for a daily average of 12,065, compared with 269,883 and a daily mean of 11,245 last season. Mutuel Handle of 0,694,193 Mutuel handle reached 0,694,193 for the 24 programs this year for a daily average of 62,258. In 1952, -wagering during the 24 afternoons aggregated 8,851,-225, a daily mean of 85,467. The 1952 figures also represented increases over 1951. Frank Gilpin showed the way among the training fraternity, also by a slim decision. Gilpin saddled eight winners to six successes apiece for J. Carrara, O. Clelland, D. Robertson and W. Sedlacek. Further equalizing first-place gleanings in the conditioning ranks were E. Anspach, A. Catal-do, J. Dupuy, J. Nerud and I. J. White, each of whom scored five times. Leading money-winning horse was Repelled, who won twice and finished third another time to amass 2,650 for his owner. Repelleds sum surpassed Miss Joannes earnings by an even ,650. Out of the 216 races conducted, there were 81 winning favorites, for a percentage of .38, above normal. Winners at odds-on held a 2-to-l advantage over those held at less than even money that failed to finish first 10 to 5.
