Tomorrows 0,000 Hazel Park Mile Holds Promise of Very Keen Contest VanBerg, Starboard Stable, Booker, River Downs Farm Nominate Stars for Event By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent HAZEL PARK, Mich., Aug. 27. The 0,000 Hazel Park Mile, for three-year-olds and upward, will have its decision here Saturday afternoon, and a crack field is expected to go to the post in the half-holiday headlines Racing secretary-handi-capper Horace Wade will post weights for the eight-furlong feature Friday morning, and the race undoubtedly will develop into one of the highlight offerings of the current Michigan season. Marion H. VanBerg stated this morning that Cajac, Whiff enpoof and Chic Wave are nominees for the Hazel Park Mile, and the thoroughbred trio certainly gives the colorful Nebraska horseman a strong hand for major honors in the .week-end attraction. Whiff enpoof , a good class winner this year and successful in the Frontier Handicap at the Detroit race course, has been close up in his engagements at this track, while Cajac and Chic Wave also raced smartly in their local outings, G. Y. Bookers hard-hitting Mad Hare, who captured the Lake St. Clair Purse at a mile and one-sixteenth, last Saturday, is in splendid condition, and she will be under silks in the Hazel Park Mile. Starboard Stables Bated Breath, another fine race mare and victress in the six and one-half furlongs Great Lakes Handicap, also" is slated to start in the eight-furlongs Saturday test. Bated Breath and Mad Hare are quite partial to the local strip and their presence in the Hazel Park Mile field will add considerable luster to the handicap. River Downs Stock Farms Irish-bred Bay Bloom, recently captured the Wyandotte Purse at one mile and his trainer Fred B. Pohl,. Jr. said that the colt will be a sure starter Saturday, barring a mishap between now and post time. Bay Blooms morning trials have been on the quick side. Others classed as possible Hazel Park mile starters are Mrs. Charles O. Schweitzers Radical, Mrs. George C. Whites Princess Trace, Grandview Stables Mid Century, Jerry Lynchs Lonoke Flash, Mrs. F. J. Vollmers homebred, My Nell; D. H. Wells Black Bantam, and Theodore D. sBuhls Detroit-owned Good Times. Also Etta B. McAtees Darkie, Mrs. M. W. Huck-abys Mikeaby, Lake Superior Purse victor, at the MRA oval, and R. A. Paracheks speedy three-year-old, Gulf Stream, who. defeated Whiffenpoof Dry Run, Golden Trend, Black Bantam, My Nell, By Jupiter and Oreo in the 1953 renewal of the 0,000 Ed McCuan Memorial Handicap at Hazel Park on August 15. Centenaire, a three-year-old filly, the get of Yong Lo and Centenary, who races under the silks of Mrs. E. Kendall Weil, is among the Hazel Park Mile eligibles and, should she sart Saturday, it will mark her Michigan debut. Centenaire didnt race as a two-year-old but won a mile race at Arlington Park in June. She placed on one other occasion and finished third in four other Chicago outings while engaging high class company. Best race on the Friday program is the St. Clair Shores Purse at one mile and one-sixteenth. G. and G. Stables Vicki Diana, Larry Rodriguez Midwest, and Mrs. Joe W. Camacs Rock Dozer appear well placed in the middle distance offering. Tommy Barrow will guide Vicki Diana, Bobby Baird is engaged for Midwest but no reinsman had been named late today for Rock Dozer. Completing the St. Clair Shores probable starting band, will be Mrs. Daisy Sukundos Noras Watch, J. R. Morgans High Living, Alinar Stables Cruel Sea, and Helen Raco-vitis Intention, a good winner during the present Hazel Park meeting.
