ft Sun Shower Proves Best Spa Fencer Handicap Is Third Success of Meeting Mrs. Cardys Son of Easton Ridden Out by Smithwick to Decisively Whip His Boots SARATOGA, Saratoga Springs, N. Y., Aug. 27. Mrs. Vernon G. Cardys Sun Shower, the revelation of the Saratoga steeplechasing season, confirmed the excellent impression he had made in the earlier Shillelah and Beverwyck Chases by capturing the culminating Saratoga Steeplechase Handicap this afternoon, carrying top weight in the small but classy -field and racing the two miles and a half in time only a second off Hampton Roads track record. His Boots, carrying 144 pounds, three less than the package on the winner, made a noble try for it, taking the final bend on almost equal terms with Mrs. Cardys fine six-year-old Easton gelding, but even before the final hedge was reached, Sun Showers superiority was evident, and his margin at the end. was a safe four lengths. Isidore Biebers Semper Eadem, who had set all the pace, and who, for a time, threatened to make a runaway of it, held on to be third, a dozen lengths in advance of the fading Extra Points. WelPPrepqred for Engagement Mickey Walsh, trainer of Sun Shower, and Pat Smithwick, the Canadian-owned geldings rider, collaborated well for this coveted stake, and Sun Shower was ably prepared for his engagement and capably ridden. His Boots was the favorite, fn spite of having been beaten by Sun Shower in their last meeting, but it was thought that the extra distance of this test might be to the Brookmeade campaigners advantage. On the contrary, Sun Shower, strongly supported at 2-to-l in the field of five, ran as if threjs miles would not have bothered him. Semper Eadem, lightweight of the field, cut out all the pace in this chase. For a full two turns of the field, Isidore Biebers Annapolis gelding held an undisputed lead, while Extra Points, Sun Shower, His Boots " and Montadet followed in that order, all of them jumping clean and big. Sun Shower and His Boots made their move together on the final lap of the course, this pair holding the race at their mercy while they yet had three-quarters of a mile to travel. Sun Showers victory was honestly earned, he looking the best when really engaged with His Boots in a drive. John "Trader" Clarks Quiz Song, strongly ridden by Willie Lester, outfinished T. F. Whites Miss Weesie to win the Hurricana Handicap, -best of the flat races, by a shrunken head. Ogden Phipps Flirtatious was a length farther back at the end of six furlongs in 1:12, the same time required by the supposedly lesser horses in the other two dashes at that distance, j Greentree Stables My Sin finished a neck out of the money, after twice getting the lead, while Mrs. Gerard Smiths favored Nilufer was another length in arrears and only a head before Myhelyn Stables My Truly Fair, who completed the field. Quiz Song returned 1.20 to her followers in the crowd of 13,261, who sweltered through the hottest afternoon of the meet. v.-
