I., N. Y., May 24. — After trailing behind the field for the first half mile of the Natchez Purse, Greentree Stables Diving Board shot past his eight rivals along the inside rail with a powerful move that carried him into the lead at the head of the stretch and went on to score a handy victory. Wheat-ley Stables Full Flight finished fairly well to be second, almost three lengths behind the Devil Diver colt and a half length before his running mate, Ogden Phipps Privacy. C. V. Whitneys Catspaw was a neck out of the money at the end of the mile. Ted Atkinson rode Diving Board, a repeater, who was favored by the crowd of 24,472 that turned out in mild, overcast weather, and paid .00. His time for the mile was a respectable 1:37% on a fast track. Drops Back After Breaking Slowly Atkinson obviously had a lapful of horse as he held Diving Board poised a couple of lengths behind the field at the far turn in the Natchez, having dropped back even farther after breaking slowly. At this stage, Chrysolite and Catspaw were engaged in a pace duel, followed by Privacy, Sam Brook, Next Page, Remand, Paper Tiger and Full Flight. Asked to move near-ing the three-furlong pole, Diving Board passed the faltering Sam Brook and Paper Tiger in a few strides, then stormed after the leaders.* Meanwhile, Next Page, showing unwonted early speed, had moved up to challenge Catspaw for the lead as Chrysolite fell back, while Privacy was also running strongly in third place and Full Flight be- Continued on Page F/ve Diving Board Repeater In Natchez at Belmont Sweeps Past Rivals Along Rail For Handy Win Oyer Full Flight Continued from Page One gan to come into contention on the extreme outside. Curving for home, the entire field swung wide, with Diving Board shooting into command on the inside, but himself almost in the middle of - the track. Atkinson continued to urge, the colt along as he rapidly widened his lead passing the furlong pole. Paper Tiger made a brisk move in the upper stretch that carried him into second place for a few strides. In the final sixteenth, Atkinson eased Diving Board, while Full Flight, though losing ground on the turn, wore down Privacy, who outfinished Catspaw. Paper Tiger hung badly to finish fifth, followed by Next Page. Closing with a strong run on the outside, C. V. Whitneys Fly Wheel took the six-furlong Haste Purse by a length and a half over Belair Studs Game Chance, who nosed out W. Haggin Perrys consistent Domquil. Vera S. Braggs Trick Pilot was another three and a half lengths out of the money, while Annadale Farms Giorgetti stopped all the way back to fifth place after leading into the stretch. Hedley Woodhouse rode Fly Wheel, who paid .60 as a tepid choice and was tele-timed a modest 1:12%. Mr. and Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Tahiti and Subahdar, who started only once last year, returned to action here and the former had speed for a half mile. This dash also served as the American debut for Elmendorf s Blood Test, who was a stakes winner in England last year. He finish fairly well after a sluggish beginning.
