Rough Maid, Emotional Figure in Beulah 7Double7 Combination Returns 8.40 In Annexing First Two Races By W. A. CRUSE f Staff Correspondent BEULAH PARK, Grove City, Ohio, May 24. — One of the warmest days of the spring session greeted upward of 4,500 fans for todays program at this compact Grove City course. The temperature was summerlike and the weather bureau reported a high of 80 degrees registered shortly before post time for the first race. R. Trupos Rough Maid, a six-year-old Rough Pass mare, and jockey Anthony Franciotti, garnered a head verdict over Mrs. H. L. Kaufmans Lenas Girl. The time for the six furlongs was 1:13% and as the second choice in the betting the winner was worth .20 for each nominal investment. Jockey Roberto Gonzalez* and H. Cantors Emotional took down the laurels in the second event, the second half of the Daily Double, and were one and one-quarter lengths the best of S. Giammarcos All a Gift, who was installed the even-money favorite in the betting. Emotional, somewhat overlooked in the wagering, returned 7.60, .40 and .40 across the board and completed a 8.40 Daily Double. Graduation ceremonies were in order for Mrs. F. Sharpe and R. Mullen, Jr.s, Gardol, following the running of the third race. The two-year-old Bull Brier colt was capa-by handled by jockey Billy Sackett and was two and one-half lengths in front of W. S. Dutcher and S. L. Katz Miss M. D. and jockey L. A. Pierce. The time for the five panels was 1:01% and again the favorite players were rewarded with a .80 mutuel. Another ceremony was in order following the running of the fourth race here this Continued on Page Forty -Eight Rough Maid, Emotional Figure in Beulah "Double7 Combination Returns 8.40 n Annexing First Two Races Continued from Page F/Ve afternoon. Charlie Bowman, a three-year-old Prince Sador gelding, which races in the interest of Frances Alvey and is trained by S. A. Carter, found his way to the winners circle for the first time in his career. Apprentice William Hubbard turned in another of his hustling rides and had the rather good looking campaigner a good three lengths in front at the furlong pole to wind up a length and three-quarters the best at the end. The card for Tuesday, the fourteenth day of this nineteen-day meeting, is dedicated to platers exclusively. The Raymond E. Schaefer County Recorder, entitles the feature attraction and it is a mile and one-sixteenth jaunt, for four-year-olds and older horses, which are scaled in value from ,000 to ,750. As is the custom on the eight-race, week-day programs, the spotlight race is carded as the seventh. F. A. Simmons Nord Flame will be trying for a consecutive victory and could very possibly be the one to beat in this well-matched field. The Nordlicht filly was one and three-quarter lengths the best of W. Fritz and C. Neddeffs My Faith under the tutelage of jockey Billy Sackett in the nightcap last Friday. That was a flat mile affair and while My Faith and jockey A. Franciotti attained a good four lengths lead before going a half-mile Sackett and the winner came from off the pace to be clocked in 1:37%. A previous effort, the second of the season, found the combination a close second to the speedy Alabama Belle and while moving up the ladder a bit an excellent accounting can be anticipated. L. Hicks English Man will be making his third appearance of the season and it will be the first time the This England colt has campaigned with a price tag attached. Though well beaten in the Pabst Blue Ribbon Purse, the feature offering on the 19th, he should improve considerably off that effort. He reportedly prefers a softer strip than he has had the last two tries but with his touch of class he cannot be overlooked in this band. Ralph Jones Sanction has been going rather steadily this year. The four-year-old Some Chance colt has had eight races and garnered a set of brackets and a second. The winning performance was an impressive one and he coasted to an eight-length lead over Rocket Marie in one of the mile affairs here on May 11th. The strip was heavy for the victory but last years races indicate that he can handle a fast strip as well. Rounding out the field are Mrs. F. Bau-mans Cardinal Lady, Mrs. Sadovskys Lucky Dog, C. K. Andrews Joes Bid, the Rainbow Stables Ruxton and J. V. Skers Top Attraction. Of the latter group Ruxton cannot be overlooked entirely. Another Some Chance offspring, he was a worthy second to B. R. Morrows Task the last time out. While five lengths the best of the remainder of the field Task was a neck the best of him in running the mile and one-sixteenth in l:4G /5.
