Record 79 Nominees for New Castle Event Will Gross 22,900 if 10 Go Grecian Queen, Evening Out, Queen Hopeful and Sixpence Named for July 5 Headliner STANTON, Del., May 24.— The richest renewal of the worlds richest race for fillies and mares — Delaware Parks 00,-000-added New Castle Handicap — looms for the mile arfd a quarter classics seventeenth running on July 5, judging by the record 79 nominations released today by racing secretary J. Gilbert Haus. Four champions appear on the list of eligibles, which includes virtually every high-ranking distaff division racer in training. By a conservative estimate based on 10 starters, the stake would gross 22,-900 and net the winner 6,300. The four champions named are Mrs. B. F. Whitakers Grecian Queen, whose New Castle triumph last year helped to establish her as best of her sex; Hasty House Farms Queen Hopeful, top money-winning juvenile filly of 1953 with 69,534 and a three-time stakes winner this season to date; Mrs. G. D. Wideners Evening Out, voted the champion two-year-old filly of 1953 in Daily Racing Form-The Morning Telegraph poll, and Alberta Ranches Sixpence II., the Irish-bred champion juvenile filly of Europe last season. Blue Butterfly Irish Star The Canada-owned Alberta Ranches also nominated another. Irish-bred star, the five-year-old Blue Butterfly. After winning the Ayr Gold Cup and Chichester Stakes abroad, Blue Butterfly along with Sixpence was imported to America and, confirming her European quality, numbered among her California efforts this spring a victory in Bay Meadows San Mateo Matron Handicap. Sixpence last season captured Englands Cheveley Park Stakes and Irelands Phoenix Plate. Other imported threats include the South Americans Rica Rosie and Inten-cion, who already have shown smart form in this country for W. Arnold Hanger, and La Giralda Stables Na Petite, who may be flown from the Gaucho country for the New Castle. The value, distance and running date of the New Castle are ideal for a championship test. The big event comes nine days after the Delaware Oaks, which gives sophomores an excellent springboard for the New Castle. In 16 previous New Castles, three-year-olds won five times, but no horse has won both stakes the same year. Of the 79 nominations to the 1954 New Castle, 39 are three-year-olds. The dates for the Oaks and New Castle have been established in appropriate sequence with other major events for distaff division racers so that they may take advantage of all opportunities. There are, in New York, for instance, the May 5 Acorn; the May 29 Coaching Club American Oaks run the day Delaware Park opens its 32-day meeting, and the June 9. Top Flight Handicap. The Delaware Oaks will be run June 26. C. V. Whitney, with foUr eligibles, is the leading New Castle nominator.
