PHIL D. took command early, set the. pace to the stretch while engaging AVION, raced the latter into defeat, then held on gamely during the drive to withstand CHAIN REACTION. The latter, forwardly placed from the start, closed strongly under brisk urging but was unable to overtake the top one. GULF STREAM, in hand early, saved ground entering the stretch and finished willingly under punishment ANDROS lacked early foot but made up ground during the last three-eighths mile. SECOND AVENUE began fast but failed to stay. SONIC could not keep up. AVION raced nearest PHIL D. for three-quarters mile, then gave way. MONEY BROKER, forced wide entering the stretch, failed to respond when set down in the drive. GOLDEN TREND pulled up quite lame. Scratched-17286 Endon, 104; 17444 Raintree, 111. WORK DONE, well placed early, was forced to the outside entering the stretch, responded willingly when straightened for the drive and wore down A GEM in the final furlong but could not hold the winner, although much the best of the others. PRANDIUM raced well to the stretch but had nothing left for the drive. DEPAL tired during the drive. LIKE HOVER was never dangerous WARAVID showed nothing. ARABIAN SAND UNSEATED HIS RIDER WHILE AT THE POST. RAN OFF THREE-QUARTERS .OF A MILE AND WAS ORDERED WITHDRAWN FROM THE RACE. ALL WAGERS ON ARABIAN SAND WERE REFUNDED. FIDGET, a sharp factor from the start, took command from BLEN SAND after entering the stretch, then held on gamely under punishment to retain a short advantage to the end. BLEN SAND took an early lead, set the pace for three-quarters mile and closed gamely, but was not good enough for the winner, although much the best of the others. COLYMBUS gave a fair effort and had no excuse. BERNROUGH was outrun and had no mishap. STARBOROUGH tired during the stretch run WAR STIM, sore during the post parade, showed nothing in the running.
