Running of 78th Preakness at Pimlico On Film Shows Crowding in Stretch Hasty Road Offender at Top Of Homelane; Hasseyampa Taken Up to Avoid Bad Jam By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 24. — Never in the history of Pimlicos famed Preakness has there been a renewal which caused more discussion and criticism than last Saturdays seventy-eigth running of the mile and three-sixteenths fixture for three-year-olds. The race was admittedly a roughly-run affair, with the first three finishers — Hasty Road, Correlation, and Hasseyampa — involved through the stretch run of three-sixteenths of a mile. There was a claim of foul. lodged by Arnold Kirkland, rider of Hasseyampa, against Correlation, under Willie Shoemaker, but the original result was allowed to stand. After viewing the films of the race this morning with several other newspapermen, then speaking with the officials, it seems possible that Kirklands claim of foul might have had a better chance of being upheld had he singled out Hasty Road as the offender. Immediately after calling the chart on the race, it was the writers duty to file the usual footnote to accompany the chart. In Continued on Page Forty-Three Preakness Films Show Crowding in Homestretch Hasty Road Drifts Out and Makes Kirkland Take Up Hasseyampa Continued from Page One the footnotes, I wrote as follows: "Hasty Road, under stout restraint while setting the pace, drifted out entering the stretch while responding "to strong pressure, then held Correlation safe. The latter, sluggish as usual early, worked his way into contention nicely, was laying on Hasseyampa while the two were moving together, then was unable to wear down the winner. Hasseyampa, allowed to settle into best stride, was moving nicely with Correlation when the leader drifted out, was forced to take up sharply and, after being sent inside, lacked the necessary late response. Kirklands claim of foul against Correlation for alleged interference was disallowed." That this personal opinion was absolutely correct was borne out by the films of the race. Correlation was laying over on Hasseyampa and both were rallying well under energetic urging. Had Hasty Road kept a straight course entering the home lane there would have been no crowding whatsoever at that point. That Hasty Road was the offender was made quite clear by the pictures of the running and it was also evident that when the Hasty House colt drifted out, Kirkland had no choice but to take up and head for the inside with Hasseyampa. This action, however, did not appear to affect the stride of Hasseyampa, who failed to make up ground in the final furlong. After Hasseyampa had been taken out of the jam, Hasty Road continued to drift out, while Correlation showed a tendency to lug in, making it impossible for Shoemaker to get the utmost-from his mount. It appeared that Shoemaker lacked room to whip his mount from the left side, while similar pressure from the right would have sent Correlation into Hasty Road, with further bumping as the consequence. Victory in the Preakness for Hasty Road completed a fine month of racing for the Hasty House Farm, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Allie Reuben, of Toledo, Ohio, as well as for trainer Harry Trotsek and jockey Johnny Adams. During the period, Hasty Road won the Derby Trial, was second in the Kentucky Derby, then won the Preakness. Queen Hopeful, the stables filly star, won the Black-Eyed Susan after having been second in the Kentucky Oaks, while Pomace, the sprint specialist, scored in the Phoenix and a division of the Crete handicap. Immediate plans for Hasty Road are not known at present, but it seems likely that he will keep his engagement in the Belmont Stakes, final gem in racings "Triple Crown." Prior to the running of the Preakness, trainer Harry Trotsek stated that the Belmont was not included in the plans for the big son of Roman, but it seems likely that the Preakness running will bring about a change in schedule. Hasty Road continued to occupy his local stall this morning, while Goyamo, Jet Action, For Free, Ring King and Nirgal Lad also were still on the grounds. Correlation departed just before noon for Garden State Park, where he is intended for Saturdays running of the 0,000-added Jersey Stakes at the mile and a furlong distance. Hasseyampa entrained this morning for Chicago, following Admiral Porter by about 24 hours. Gigantic arid Gaidar have already been vanned to New York, while Goyamo and Jet Action will follow shortly.
