Racing Secretary Post To James P. Ross, Jr. Takes Oyer Important Position With Atlantic City Race Course PLEASANT VILLE, N. J., May 24.— James P. Ross, Jr., who has served in various capacities in the racing departments of tracks throughout the East and Middle West, has been named racing secretary at the Atlantic City Race Course for the 50-day meeting which starts August 10. An announcement to this effect w a s made today by Phillip J. Baker, general manager of the shore course. Ross succeeds John Turner, Jr. Ross was born in the shadow of the old Lexington race track when his father was track superintendent there. The family moved to Havre de Grace in 1920, where Ross, Sr., served as assistant general manager. Young Jimmy was named a patrol judge there in 1935 and then served in other positions at that course! He has held positions as patrol and placing judge and as clerk of scales at tracks in Maryland, New England and Florida in subsequent years. He has also served as assistant racing secretary at Narragansett and Tropical Park and, during 1952 and 1953, as racing secretary at Centennial Race Track. He is currently affiliated in the racing department at Detroit Race Course. Married, he has two children, a son 18, a freshman at the University of Miami, and a daugh%ter of 11. His family resides in Coral Gables, Fla. Ross served 26 months with the Navy Air Corps during World War n. James Ross, Sr., who has retired, is now visiting tracks in Ireland and England.
