nT Dancer, Straight Face Work Fast J. W. BURTON— Sent out Ceremony to win yesterdays opening race at Detroit. Indicate Peak Form For Suburban Duel Gray Breezes Nine Furlongs In 1:53%, Latter Clocked Mile in 1 :38% at Belmont BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 24. — Native Dancer and Straight Face, who provided a thrilling contest in the Metropolitan Mile, which they are slated to renew in next Mondays Suburban at a mile and a quarter, both worked impressively for that traditional fixture. Alfred G. Van-derbilts gray champion breezed a mile and a furlong, working alone, in 1:53% on Sunday morning. The Greentree four-year-old, also working on his lonesome, went a niile in 1:38% this morning, making the move so handily that he was hardly more than breezing. In the Metropolitan, Native Dancer carried 130 pounds to 117 on Straight Face and beat his rival by a neck in the final strides of the mile. Weights for the Suburban are not due until Wednesday, but the sons of Polynesian and Count Fleet are expected to meet again, regardless of John Banks Campbells assignments and their week-end preps suggest that both will be at peak form. Native Dancer was going very easily as he stepped the half in :53 and six furlongs in 1 : 17%, then clicked off furlongs in : 12 %, :12 and :12 without "apparent effort. The final time was better than some horses have required in winning nine-furlong races at this meeting. Straight Faces Fractions Straight Faces somewhat shorter trial was what is expected of a front-runner, the fractions being :36%, :48, 1:00 and six furlongs in 1:12%. The track was fast both days. King Ranchs Riverina, a candidate for Saturdays Coaching Club American Oaks at a mile and three furlongs, also enlivened the Sabbath workout period by stepping a handy mile and a furlong in 1:53%. Her fractions were :50, 1:15, 1:40% 1:53%, while the daughter of Princequillo galloped out another furlong in 2:07%. Trainer Max Hirsch also sent King Ranchs High Gun a very impressive mile in 1:37% in preparation for the Peter Pan Handicap on June 5. The Heliopolis colt had speed from the start, skipping the initial three panels in :35, half in :47, five furlongs in :59%, three-quarters in 1:12 and seven furlongs in 1:24. This morning, trainer John Gaver also sent Greentrees Palm Tree, who finished behind High Gun in the Withers after beating that colt in an overnight event here, a handy mile in 1:40%. The work was even all the way with fractions of :38, :50%, 1:14% and 1:27%. Syl Veitch sent C. V. Whitneys Small Favor, a CCA Oaks candidate, a mile and a quarter in 2 : 12 this morning. The Priam* H filly was merely breezing along, well in hand, and got the mile in 1:44%. Vitch also sent Fisherman a slow mile in 1:46% for the Peter Pan. The Phalanx colt was under a strong hold all the way. Incidentally, work-watchers observed that the Belmont — ain track was exceptionally fast Sunday morning, merely fast today.
