f _ — , , Davey, Martinez End Drills For Bout in Chicago Stadium Eastern Welter Runs Total * Sparring Heats to Even 100 For Tomorrow Nights Clash Vince Martinez, No. 6 welterweight contender, has worked more rounds for his Wednesday night encounter with Chuck Davey in Chicago Stadium than for any fight he ever had. The Patterson, N. J., slugger ran his total sparring heats to 100 with Mondays final drill at the Midwest Gym. Previously, he worked 90 for his second Chico Vejar fight. Manager Bill Daly pointed out that the 100 rounds includes a warmup 10-rounder in Youngstown, Ohio, with Babyface Jones two weeks ago. Daly imported a southpaw spar-mate, Carmine Bartolameo from Philadelphia. The youngster ,has won all 10 of his pro fights and has been giving Martinez plenty of lefty practice. Had to Employ Southpaw Daly pointed out that it was necessary to import a lefty because he alleges Issy Kline, Davey s trainer, tied up a lot of local lefties. "They dont fool me. Kline must be paying all these kids around here not to work with me. They sent me this Richard Guerrero. Terrific fighter, but hes too big and slow to help Vince train for a fast welter like Davey." Meanwhile, Davey also finished his heavy drills in the Midwest, boxing Johnny Brown. The latter will take on Luther Rawlins in the first of an elimination series to pick a state welter champ. It will be the extra 10-round attraction on Wednesdays card. Brown won an impressive upset over Rawlings at Rainbo Arena last fall. Since then, Rawlings respect for the Chicago youngster has increased enough that he has buckled down to hard work and vows he will reverse that last fight. The semi-windup pits Luther Rawlings and Johnny Brown in the first of a welterweight elimination tourney to. pick an Illinois State welterweight champion. Rawlings, long-time lightweight contender, dropped an upset decision to Brown last fall and is out to avenge that loss. Brown is the boy was almost stopped Daveys illustrious career early. He caught Chuck with a right hand in their Rainbo bout two years ago and had the MSC slugger groggy. But Chuck had piled up a big lead on two knockdowns and weathered the storm. But it proved that Brown was more than just another trial horse. Gibson said the ticket sale for Wednesdays dard was very brisk. /
