Press Sports Writer GULLANE, Scotland, May 26.-A depleted American delegation of Frank Stranahan, Bill Campbell and three servicemen survived the rigorous competition of the British Amateur Golf championship today and gained Thursdays fifth round. Only five of 14 Americans- who started play today *won their third and fourth ; round matches during the third day of the week-long match play grind on the ancient i Muirf ield course. Harold Ridgley, an Air Force master sergeant from Haverford, Pa.-; Richard I Davies, a sailor from Pasadena, Calif., and |Maj. ~W,. D. Henderson of San Francisco .kept pace with Stranahan and Campbell. I Frank Strafaci of Garden City, N. Y, bowed out in one of the most bitterly contested matches in the tournaments 69-year history. Strafaci, who was rated with Stranahan and Campbell as one of Americas top threats, lost to Australias Peter Toogood on the 25th hole. The match lasted four I hours and 15. minutes and was only holes ! short of the longest contest ever played in the tournament. I Stranahan, the husky Toledo, Ohio, millionaires son who is seeking his third title in the event, scored a 4 and 3 victory , over Dr. R. J. Henderson of England in the third Tound. After lunch, he coasted to a 6 and 5 triumph over William Kirk-patrick of Ireland. | Stranahan in Weak Quarter I Strananan is in a weak quarter of the draw but if lie reaches Fridays semifinals he may collide with defending champion Joe Carr of Ireland. Carr, who has whipped Frank three times in match play, gained the fifth round with a 4 and 3 victory over Larry Carpenter of Springfield, N. J. Carr ousted Archie Frazer of Scotland, 4 and 3, this morning. | "While Stranahan coasted and chatted i with liis rivals, Campbell, of Huntington, ~W. Ridgley, a freckle-faced long-ball hitter who is stationed in England, posted a 6 and 5 triumph over K. G. Patrick of Scotland this afternoon after going 19 holes to beat W. I. McDonald of Scotland before lunch. The 23-year-old Davies beat J. B. Beck of England, 1 up, after eliminating Hamilton Wright of Sharon, Conn., 5 and 3. Henderson advanced at.- the expense of two Australians, scoring a 3 and 1 triumph over John Gregory in the third round and following with a 3 and 2 victory over W. A. .Edgar. Carpenter, who recently was released from the intelligence branch of the Army, | had made an impressive showing until he played Carr, "having ousted Alex Kyle of England, the 1939 champion, 3 and 2, in I the third round. I Joe Walter Case of Hendersonville, N. C, | lost to A. M. M. Boucher of Scotland, 3 and [ 2, and Barton Bridgeford of San Francisco lost to E. 1m. Dalton of South Africa on the 19th hole in other fourth round tests involving Americans. Case and Bridgeford had won third rounders yesterday. In- addition to Wright, four other U. S. players lost third round matches in the morning. Capt. Malcolm Stokes of Tulsa, Okla.,"was eliminated by Toogood, 6 and 4; Bob Sweeny, former champion from Palm Beach, Fla„ dropped a 4 and 3 decision to Count John Debendem of England; James Murray of Pittsburgh lost to Dale Smith of Scotland, 2 and 1, and W. G. Wallace of Pomona, Calif., lost to Scotlands Murray, 2 -up.
