Gatyup, Galeo Entered In Beulah Park Feature Howdy Howdy, Double Hustle Also Named; Oddity in Opening Race By W. A. CRUSE Staff Correspondent BEULAH PARK, Grove City, Ohio, May 26. — The card for Thursday, sixteenth day of this 19-day session, appears just about average for a week-day presentation. The feature attraction is the seventh race, the one allowance test on the program. Under the conditions, nine four-year-old and older horses accepted the issue at six furlongs, which carries a ,200 purse, and it could shape up as an interesting race. Comprising the field are W. H. Smiths Boy Blue, E. L. Browns Cross End, Seeley Kilpatricks Howdy Howdy, Walter W. Gatys Gatyup, L. Snodgrass Sea Sweet, Mrs. L. Frys Double Hustle, the L-Roy Stables Bit o Prose, Mrs. N. M. Reiffs Melmars U. N. and P. H. Johnsons Gayleo. Gatyups first outing over this course and his first encounter this year was disappointing. He finished a dismal twelfth in the 12-horse field, but that was over a very heavy racing strip. The company was of the best, however and, in a following encounter, he finished sixth to be beaten but a length and three-quarters in one of the most exciting races of the current meeting. That was again against some of the better allowance stars campaigning here. , His next effort was a nose verdist over Double Hustle in a ,500 claiming affair, and he should go well in this group while trying for a second consecutive win. Gayleo made his third appearance of the current meeting in the Governors Handicap last Saturday. The Emileo gelding was fifth in that affair and, while a good seven lengths behind such as E. Sorbers Ferol S., C. Hartwicks Red Sultan, Smith and Steeles Mestiza and Gale Osbornes Star Nymph, the winners time was 1:44, just four-fifths of a second off the track record, which is held by Atalanta and was established here on October 4, 1952. Prior to that effort, Gayleo was third, but a head behind Reno Red and Gray Battle in an allowance race at six furlongs. From all indications, he seems to be nearing his 1953 form, and could be the one to fear in this group. Howdy Howdy, like Gatyup, has been victorious here. This Challenge Me gelding drove to a two-length victory over ,000 platefs last week, being clocked six furlongs in 1:12. That was his first victory of the season in 10 starts, all of which have been with the same price tag attached and, while he is much improved, he will have his work cut out for him to garner any portion of the laurels Thursday. A decidedly dull, dismal day greeted the fans on hand for todays eight-race program. Prior to the first race a light drizzle sent the patrons scurrying for shelter, but during the running of the opening event the railbirds were in evidence, replete with the necessary covering to remain dry. An unusual thing happened for the first race. I. M. Starlings Great Neck, a fiVe-year-old Confiado — Mons Meg mare, unseated jockey Norman Hart on the way to the post. Hart announced that he had no intentions of accepting that mount after her antics and the plater was returned to the paddock in preparation of securing another rider. Starter Tom Brown, evidently misunderstanding the purpose of the horses return to the paddock, allowed the remaining 11 horses to be loaded and were subsequently sent on their way promptly. A refund was made on all wagers made on Great Neck, which totalled ,579, following the running of the race. It is believed this is the first time this has ever happened in the history of racing at this plant. Jockey J. C. Fernandez became the first rider of the meeting to ride both ends of the daily double here this afternoon. Fernandez was astride P. H. Johnsons Two Gs in the opener and had this aged Good Goods gelding two and one-quarter lengths in front of H. V. Courtneys Tulomas Girl, which had the saddle services of W. Hubbard. The track has evidently not been affected by the light drizzle as Fernandez sent the winner the six furlongs in 1:122-5. The second half of the double found Fernandez and Mrs. J. Bronnenbergs Shooters Hill the strongest contestants. Engaging in a stretch duel with P. L. Prices Deb Daughter he was a half length the best of that one at the wire. The standard time of 1:12% was again posted for the six furlongs and the Daily Double was officially a seven-four combination, was worth 46.40.
