Only Three Plate Victors Have Won Ascot Gold Cup Blacktype Will Have Chance to Join List in Saturdays Event ASCOT PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, May 26. — Following his record-breaking performance in last Saturdays Victory Plate, Blacktype has assumed the role of favorite for the 5,000 Ascot Gold Cup which will be renewed here Saturday for the fourteenth time. However, in the 13 previous runnings of the Cup, only three horses have taken the Victory Plate and gone on to account for the Gold Cup. The last time this occurred was in 1949 when License did the trick but the competition then wasnt as it will be Saturday. The finish of the 1954 Victory Plate was ntriguirig. Blacktype, leader from start to finish in the mile and one-half race, hit the wire four lengths in front. The runner-up battle found three horses heads apart at the line. But the trio closest in pursuit — Some Fun, Windy and Motiger — seemed to be coming fastest of all at the end, and the Gold Cup distance is two miles — an additional 1,760 yards. Some Fun, one of the most beautiful thoroughbreds ever seen at Ascot, won in good company at Hialeah Park, where he was claimed -by the River Divide Farms, then won in top company at Suffolk Downs, from whence he was shipped to. Ascot. Windy, winner of the Gold Cup in 1952, didnt contest last years "Gold Cup, but won the Marathon Series at Randall Park. He doesnt "start to roll" until at least a mile and a quarter has been travelled. Saturday, Blacktype was too far in front to be menaced at this point. Motiger, as tenacious as the name of his sire, Tiger, was flying at the finish, and he ! ! too indicated he would relish the extra distance. Whats more, Some Fun and Motiger plainly were unaccustomed to the sharper turns on Ascot Parks three-quarter mile strip. Although Bee Arr and Robert finished seventh and ninth, respectively, behind Blacktype both are capable of doing much better. Bee Arr, topweighted at 123 pounds, dropped from fourth to seventh when the real racing began, but was not punished. He carries a higher price tag than any of the others. Robert, son of Whirlaway, bears a striking resemblance to his daddy, who won turfdoms "Triple Crown," and is expected to be right there Saturday. The event will be eighth race on the second-to-last program at the 1954 meeting which closes on the Memorial Day holiday, Monday, May 31.
