Menolene Sets Record in Rancocas Filly Skirts Five Furlongs in :59i Conquers Courtesy, Fantine Busher for Her Third Stakes * Success Before 21,364 Fans By FRED GALIANI GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 26.— Dickey Stables Menolene, who ran third to the good colts, Royal Note and Nashua, in the Cherry Hill Stakes, turned in a front-running victory over juvenile fillies in the twelfth running of the Rancocas Stakes here today. The Bull Brier filly outran her opponents and finished thre-quarters of a length before Claiborne Farms Courtesy, while Maine Chance Farms Fantine Busher was three lengths back in third place. The crowd of 21,364 who turned out in warm, sunny weather was not swayed by the impressive records of many of the invaders and the majority of them, having seen Menolene run against colts, made her the favorite. She rewarded their confidence with .40 for every . Kenny Church, who flew in especially for the race from Chicago, urged the filly over the f ive . furlongs in :59V£, a new record for the stakes, bettering that set by Bed O Roses in 1949 by one tick of the clock The Rancocas was worth 5,175 net to owner William Leach of Dickey Farm, and the Bull Brier filly now has won 5,570. Both Leach and his wife were present to receive the Rancocas Trophy from Raymond Lott, mayor of nearby Barrington. Four in Row for Boulmetis This was the third stakes score for the filly. She had previously won the Gulf-stream Dinner and the Singing Tower Stakes in Florida. Her record for the year is an impressive five victories in seven starts with one third and a fourth. There were a number of fleet misses in the race, and winners to boot* What made Menolenes score so impressive was that she carried 121 pounds, giving weight to all of her rivals. She broke rapidly and alertly, went out on the lead and paced the way before Courtesy and Fierce. Courtesy tried vainly to overhaul Menolene, but was not able to do so in the early running, although she saved all the possible ground by hugging the rail. Fantine Busher made her move rounding the turn and appeared to be on her way to a threat, but was on the outside. Menolene was tackled again by Courtesy in a last-ditch struggle, but Church kept the Florida-owned filly going to tHS end to hold her -margin over the Caliborne miss. Fantine Busher, who had won her only previous race, closed well on the outside, but was no danger to the first two under the wire. Sammy Boulmetis rode his fourth straight winner on T. F. Corcoran s Stepper Upper in the Woodstown Purse, a trial for Mondays Colonial Handicap. In a hard drive, Stepper Upper outgamed Alfred Van-derbilts odds-on Outsmart, while G. R. Watkins Mrs. G. R. was a distant third, arid a head before Darby Dan Farms Ata-lanta. Mrs. G. R. was the lone entrant in the field of seven who is not named for the Colonial. Stepper Upper was an outsider and paid 9.60 while getting the six furlongs in 1:11%. The score put Boulmetis one up on Har-tack for the leading riding honors of the waning days of the meeting, with a 32 and 31 box score. Boulmetis was unplaced in the first race, then won the second on Happy Rabbit, the third on Mimir, a first-time starter who came up a good thing and won at 8 to 5 after opening at 8 to 1, and the fourth on Bold Blue. He did not ride in the fifth and then came back to register with the surprising Stepper Upper.
