Going Away in Front at All Markers At Home Over Turf Course at Pimlico Brookmeade Veteran Holds Two and Half Lengths Edge On Our Emblem in Mile Test By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 26. — Making his third start in almost two years, Brookmeade Stables veteran stakes win-, ner, Going Away, lowered Pimlicos one-mile turf course record to 1:38% in accounting for the featured Manchester Purse. George T. Weymouths Our Emblem was second, two and one-half lengths behind the winner and a neck before Carl M. Grahams Wabash Moon. Emerald Hill Stables Blue Shore was just a head behind that one, followed by Mrs. Janon Fisher Jr.s Dawn Flight and Mrs. C. T: Hollo-ways Docteur. Going Away, an eight-year-old Whirl-away gelding, completed his 1952 campaign in late August and did not get back to the races until June of the following year. He made but one start that season, then was idle for almost a year prior to returning to competition here on Preakness Day. Running for a claiming price of ,000 on that occasion, the veteran was second behind Side Saddle, whose track record he lowered today. Going Away, under apprentice Roger Conlon, was held at .40 by the crowd of 10,710. Taken Under Steadying Restraint Losing little time in his quest for the lead, Going Away moved to the front in the run to the first turn, then was taken under steadying restraint while moving over to the inner hedge. He had no trouble with the opposition, coasting along with an advantage of from two to three lengths for the full eight furlongs. Our Emblem managed to save the place over the favored Wabash Moon. Sylvester Richs Varsity was a punctual .60 favorite in the secondary attraction, rallying from off the pace to wear down P. H. Faulconers Westover while being timed in 1:12% for six furlongs. -The two were separated by just a head at the wire, with Watson Elliotts Major Pomp less than a length farther back. Jockey Bill Balzaretti, whose winners this spring have been none too frequent, turned in a saddle double, completing it astride Pebblebrook Farms Running Chance, 7.20 winner of the fifth race. The previous winning ride turned in by "Balzy" was atop Felipe Baldis Colony Pagt in the second event. Colony Page paid 6.40 and put the finishing touches on a 57.40 daily double for those supporters who had coupled him with H. McGowans Dictionary, .60 winner of the opener. Clotted Cream, a, two-year-old, son of Pasteurized, who races for Harry B. Marcus, returned 3.00 after winning the five-furlong third race by a half length under jockey Robert Runyon in 1:01%. Clotted cream prevailed over the Gee M. Cohen-Saggy Farm entry of Chuck Thompson and Sagmon. Longest priced winner on the card was James Y. Pyles Greens Folly in the fourth race. This Four Freedoms mare paid 4.80 after galloping the mile and a sixteenth under Charlie McKee. Charles M. .Camacs Delove and P. L. Leydeckers March Chick were second and third, respectively.
