MURPHY I LINCOLN FIELDS, Crete, HI., May 26.— Old-timer Jack Welch, who breeds some very useful horses on his Kentucky farm, was here the other day and was marveling at the wonders of modern transportation. Jack had just airplaned in from Detroit ,,, . hi slightly over one hour. Conversing with him anent his thorough-JH bred bred breeding, breeding. activi-*— activi- bred bred breeding, breeding. activi- ties, we noted a trace of regret in his voice when he spoke of his stallion, Yellow Tulip, who died last week. Yellow Tulip, a son of Jean Valjean, was a stakes runner in his day, and while he never produced an outstanding horse, got some useful runners. Welch told us that the stallion Alabama is doing right well on his place, and seven foals by him have arrived. He also has four by Yellow Tulip. Jack has 120 acres in the most lush section of the Lexington horse breeding country. He calls his place Whileaway Farm. He also has some horses in training, including Welcome Guest, a useful son of Alsab. Welcome Guest, bred by Welch, is being trained by J. P. Sallee. After looking over a few races at Lincoln Fields; Jack "hopped" another plane for Louisville. AAA Jockey Leslie Wickel is due to resume riding here Thursday following a suspension at Sportsmans Park. He will handle the horses of W. H. Bishop . . . Sue Bbgen-schutz, daughter of the Lincoln Fields racing secretary, will graduate from Our Lady of Cincinnati College at Cincinnati, Ohio, next Tuesday . . . Jockey Sherman Armstrong, who rode For Free to fifth place in the Preakness, was an arrival and will ply his trade here until time to leave for Belmont Park to pilot the Howard Jones-owned colt in the Belmont . . . Jack Chestnut, a jockey, got in from Beulah Park to try his luck. Says the opposition at the Ohio course was too tough . . . Dan Stewart, well known and popular trainer, has entered. Little Company of Mary Hospital, Chicago, for a check-up . . . Good news is that apprentice Herbert Cavalier is showing slow but steady improvement at St. Anthonys Hospital. AAA Buddy Vail, who rode around Chicago a number of years ago, is a member of the automobile parking crew at Lincoln Fields . . .Ralph Bonn, former jockey who recently saddled the long-priced Sleepy Tigress for Joe Kohout, is looking for more work despite the fact that he has a number of horses in his care. He is willing - to take two or three more. . .Conns Joy, owned by George Vanale, of Memphis, Term., has been added to the public stable being trained by Joe Bollero. . .Duane Terry, a photographer .on Chicago tracks for a number of seasons, is branching out. Has become an owner through the purchase of Ciled Orphan, a four-year-old and R. E. Kurelik has been engaged to do the training. . .Under Pressure, who pulled up lame here the other day, has been purchased by R. N. Burnham from Mrs. G. H. Emick and will be turned out until late autumn. . . Avalon Stable has purchased Jumbo Lies from W. H. Bishop.. .Mr. and Mrs. John L. Allgeier are visiting from Louisville. They have some horses here in charge of J. P. Keezek. AAA Thursdays fourth race has been designated the RCA Penthouse Purse in honor of a group of delegates to the radio and TV convention currently being held in Chicago. Mannie Sachs, vice-president and general manager of RCA Victor, will make an award to the winning owner and will be accompanied to the winners circle by June Valli, recording star. Two delegates chosen by lot will attend the track as guests of RCA Victor and each will be given betting money. Those picking a winner will receive a TV set. . .Saratoga stakes books are being distributed. . .Phil Handler, line coach of the Chicago Bears pro football team, was a visitor. . .Ten Lies, two-year-old filly who graduated from the maiden ranks here Tuesday, is by Attention who gained fame in defeating Whirl-away in the Arlington Classic. Attention was one of the best sons of Equipoise for whom a stake at Arlington Park is named. AAA Robert Carey, managing director of Hawthorne, has received a letter from a native of Saudi Arabia offering to send over 10 racing camels for competition at the meeting. It has been suggested they run against Gnus. The man offers to supply his own camel drivers. Now wouldnt that be just ducky . . . Above we called attention to Attentions offspring winning. On the same day we had another winner from an Arlington Classic victory. That was the Illinois-bred Pondering, who is by The Dude. The latter won the Classic five years after Attention.
