Juvenile Stakes Is ThrillerThroughout Unbeaten Barclay Youngster Ends Opponents Win Skein By Narrowest of Margins By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y , May 11.— The placing judges studied the photo of the finish of the seventy-ninth running of the Juvenile Stakes for more than five minutes today before announcing that Barclay Stables Pollys Jet had won the five-furlong dash by a nose over Lily-Ann Stables Getthere Jack, who had won his five previous starts. Starmount Stables Nantallah, the short-priced favorite, finished almost a length behind the furiously struggling leaders and 10 lengths before Mrs. Lloyd P. Tates Jean Baptiste. Eddie Arcaro rode Pollys Jet, who was scoring his third victory in as many starts and had to put up his strongest finish to hold off Getthere Jack, who came on again under Hedley Woodhouses drive in the final yards. Pollys Jet paid .00 as second choice with the crowd of 21,411 and stepped the five furlongs on the straight course in : 56 4*s, the fastest running of the Juvenile Stakes since it was increased to five furlongs back in 1892. Favored Nantallah Third The favored Nantallah. who had won his only previous start in brilliant style at Jamaica, appeared quite green, bearing out on Gelio early in the running and climbing a good part of the way. The struggle between Pollys Jet. who was purchased privately from breeder Duval A. Headley, and Getthere Jack, who was acquired at Saratoga for ,600 from Whitney Stones Morven Stud, was a thriller all the way. At the furlong pole, Pollys Jet appeared to have the race won and there was some doubt that Getthere Jack would be able to save second money from Nantallah, but the little son of Bime-lech responded courageously to the sting of Woodhouses whip in the final desperate yards and missed gaing a head heat by the shortest possible margin. After the race, Arcaro. who had won last years Juvenile on Nashua, said that Pollys Jet is "the best two-year-old Ive ridden this year, but this one was too close for comfort. Woodhouse said of Getthere Jack: "Just as we got to the odds-board, he Continued on Page Forty -Three Pollys Jet Takes 1 Juvenile by Nose Unbeaten Barclay Youngster Ends Opponents Win Streak By Narrowest of Margins Continued from Page One propped when he saw it and all the people and that hesitation beat us." Pollys Jet is a handsome chestnut son of Polynesian from Marys Dell, by Case Ace. who appears to be still carrying quite a bit of flesh and has considerable room for muscular development. The Barclay Stable is the nom de course of John Mc-Shain, of Philadelphia, who netted 4,725 of the gross purse of 0,150. While this edition of the Juvenile was a three -horse race most of the way, and particularly at the finish, there were ex- i cuses for a couple of the others. C. V. » Whitneys Head Man literally fell out of i the gate, while Gelio was bumped by Nan- | tallah while racing forwardly. Jean Bap-tiste ran an even race to get the minor share of the awards, followed by Gray Phantom, King Somali, pelio, Head Man and Ripingale. The remarkably fast time of this Juvenile did not appear to be due to the wind, j which blew across the track and hardly | could have helped Getthere Jack as he sped the opening quarter in :22, while Pollys Jet joined him at that point and j they stepped the half in :442s. | A stumble at the start probably cost Brookmeade Stables speedy filly, Gand- | harva the victory over seven male rivals in the six-furlong Cassis Purse. Despite this mishap, the favorite only succumbed by three-quarters of a length to Wheatley j Stables Dark Ruler. The same stables Laugh was another three-quarters of a j length behind Gandharva in third place. , Ted Atkinson rode Dark Ruler and was j completing a double started with Tomfool- 3 ery in the first race. The Bimelech colt paid 2.80 and stepped the six panels in 1:11%. J Steeplechase to Carafar The field was as closely bunched as that , for a six -furlong sprint for a mile and a . half of the Whaddbn Chase Steeplechase. • then John M. Schiff s Carafar and Brook- . meade Stables Bavaria parted company , with their four rivals. At the end of the "about" two miles. Carafar, who was making his seasonal debut, was three and a [ half lengths in the van and appeared to , have quite a bit left, while it was 35 lengths , from Bavaria back to Mrs. G. L. Ohrstroms Prince Glorieux. Carafar. who was ridden by Flint "Scot-ty" Schulhofer paid .20 and was timed a . creditable 3:4245 over the hard track. Ethel D. Jacobs George Murphy, who bruised Ted Atkinsons feet so badly in I j the starting gate last Thursday that he had to borrow a larger pair of boots to j I finish the day. spilled the veteran in the I post parade for todays fourth race, ran ! around the training track and up the I J I chute, but took part in the race and finished third. W. M. Wickhams Winning Fleet won the mile and a sixteenth test by I , three and one-half lengths over W. T. j I Lyons Dusty Drive, who led George Mur- j I phy by a neck. Eric Guerin rode Winning I ; Fleet, who paid .30 and was teletime in! j 1:44%. I Evidently, Vera Braggs Tomfoolery : needed the services of Tom Fools jockey to bring out his best efforts in the first race. Ted Atkinson rode him for the first time today, and the son of Star Pilot graduated on the fifth attempt after having been unplaced in his previous four starts. Tomfoolery led for most of the four and one-half furlongs to score by almost a length over Clifford Mooers Suydam, who led E. M. OBriens Folding Mon by a neck. Tomfoolery paid 9.60 and was teletimed in :5225. When Mrs. Jules Schwartz Pinuhta took the seven-furlong second race under Bennie Serido, it completed a 30.50 Daily Double. Pinuhta. which means "little nothing. lasted to turn back Ethel D. Jacobs Fleet Choice by a half length. The latter gave Ted Atkinson a hard time in the post parade, behaving with the wayward ill humor typical of the Stymies. Pin-huta paid 0.10 straight and was clocked in 1:25V
