N. J., May 11.— The 0,000 added Jersey Stakes here at Garden State Park this week end could produce an interesting con-. test test among among some some quite quite estimable estimable test test among among some some quite quite estimable estimable colts. The Chesapeake winner, Saratoga, who all but "washed away" in the long Florida Derby parade, is on the grounds and is reported training famously for his engagement in this nine furlongs. And as this is written we understand that S. G. Babbitz" Speed Rouser is en route from Churchill Downs, where he was a winner last Saturday. The Jersey was introduced in 1942, when Sal to was returned its winner and it has seldom been won by a moderate performer. Across the years such as Lucky Draw, Double Jay, Citation, Palestinian and Royal Bay Gem have collected the winners award. The race last season developed a shocking upset, when Correlation bore in badly and the surprising War of Roses, a son of Englands Tudor Minstrel, won for Mrs. Thouron, with Red Hannigan second and no less a colt than High Gun third. Added Money to Stakes Roster Garden State Park, always lavish in its distribution, this spring is adding 00,000 to a roster of eight stakes features. The Jersey is the richest of these with 0,000 added, and it will be supplemented next Wednesday by the 0,000 added Cherry Hill Stakes for two-year-olds, on the following Saturday the 0,000 added Camden Handicap for three -year-olds and upward. Then come the important 0,000 added Rancocas Stakes for two-year-old fillies, the 5,000 added Colonial Handicap for fillies and mares and the Betsy Ross, of similar value, for three-year-old fillies on Decoration Day. A good many of the nominees for these features are training on Long Island, but will make the short van junket to Camden. Along with scores of Gothams more itinerant turf goers, who annually commute to the tracks in this state and continue to, despite the increase in take from 12 to 13 per cent. This still is more economical than the commission in the neighboring state, where it is an imposition of 15 per cent. The circumstance that Swaps, like Determine, has proved his point in the Kentucky Derby and has forthwith returned to California, contains certain implications some of our eastern turf entrepreneurs may not much fancy. For the sake of candor, we believe that if anyone thinks about it a while, this only reflects the expansive growth and development of the sport — and with something like 28 00,000 stakes on the calendar, the various clubs are on their own mettle to provide their patrons the best sport possible. It is clear that the more contemporary, realistic horsemen think the tradition of the American Triple Crown a pretty fiction, and a slavish imitation of the English original. Each spring fewer horses owners feel it incumbent to move from the Derby to the Preakness, to the Belmont. Multiple Nomination May Curtail Entries We jfcjjflned this a year ago, if you will recall. Of "Wfljrte. Fandmi jpie we were constrained to think perhaps the TrrpWCrown events all would benefit from a package deal nomination fee and closing. Now we are not so sure. The Preakness this year has more nominees than either the Derby or Belmont, though Swaps is the big one who got away. Evidently there are horsemen who will nominate for one race — and not in every case the Derby — but fail to file eligibility for the other two. It is sometimes a matter of geography and stable policy. For instance, how many New York champions ship to California for what are considered major events on the West Coast? Now we think that probably such a multiple nomination fee would have the effect of curtailing the number of entries and values of each race. Turf ana: Garden State has the start of a turf course. . . . Friend returned from the Derby declares: "From where I sat it was only a rumor." . . . Texas oil men, with parties of from 20 to 50, reserve Derby hotel reservations from one "Rose Run" to the next. . . . Garden State was the first course to establish a daily average play of ,000,000. , . . It also was first to play to more than 1,000,000 patrons in a single season. . . . Gene Mori likes to mingle with his general admission customers, seeking possible suggestions for improvements. It is difficult to know where the clubhouse ends and the grandstand begins here. . . . Swaps is in the American Derby. Nashua is conspicuous by his absence and it is questionable if the twain will meet again this season. . . . The expensive Menolene is a candidate for the Betsy Ross at this point. . . . Ditto Wheatleys High Voltage, champion of the 1954 two-year-old fillies. . . . Hasty House has made a number of stakes nominations at this meeting. . . . The recent Belmont Park winner, Case Goods, is a prospect for the Colonial Handicap. . . . Improved race bus transportation facilities seem assured Hialeah next season
