Varsity Conquers Algasir by Neck jBlum Gets Longshot Home in Long Drive Bronze Warrior Runs Third; Crowd of 20,689 on Hand To See Rich Runner Prevail By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 11.— Sylvester Richs Varsity, next to the longest price in the field of seven competing in the featured Newark Purse, came through with . a determined stretch drive under Walter Blum here this afternoon that carried him to a neck verdict over Henry A. Kimballs Algasir in the last yards of the six-furlong event. Algasir gave way grudgingly after having battled for the pace all of the distance and finished three lengths in front of East Acres Bronze Warrior. Charles T. Chen-erys Belluno was another nose behind. A crowd of 20,689 witnessed the feature under sunny skies, although clouds hovered above until mid-afternoon. They over- looked Varsity a four-year-old gelding by Unbreakable, to the tune of a 9.20 mu- tuel. It was his first start since winning two distance races at Gulfstream Park early in the month, but trainer Edward W. King had him tuned tightly and he covered the six panels over a f£st surface in 1:102;. A. H. Bowens Post Prandial, an eligible to the Camden Handicap, May 21; T. P. Morgans Plus Fours and H. H. Polks Zuy-der Zee dueled for the lead for three fur-"" longs with the three rivals who arrived first at the finish. They were at a disadvantage racing on the outside and they were abreast, five lengths from the top ones. Flapper Upsets Predictions Vine -Lin Farms Flapper, disregarded at 30-to-l in a field of seven horses, upset the calculations in the mile and a sixteenth fifth race with a half-length decision over the 11 -to-10 favorite, J. Intiles Fat Boy. Bertrando Bros. Maryland Line also made a strong stretch challenge, but his bid fell short by another half length, the same margin he held over Irene R. Martins Miss Benz. The pay-off on Flapper was 2.20. and she was timed in l:44y5. Flapper raced in blinkers for the first time in her last start here and finished last in another seven-horse field. She was claimed from that event and today had blinkers removed. Fat Boy. coming off of an excellent sprint effort his first outing here, was the "one to beat" at all stages of the race, although Willie Hartack was pushing along steadily to have him formidably placed behind the pace-setting Miss Benz and Mrs. W. B. Dietrichs Ronas. Flapper was reserved behind this trio and, racing slightly wide on the turn, remained lightly in hand until the head of the stretch. The favorite went to the front entering the home lane and opened a clear lead, Lut Flapper closed in from the outside and Maryland Line rushed from a distant last to surge up next to the rail. Henry Block, who rode the winning four-year-old Chal-ledon filly, kept her going evenly to wrest command in the final yards, but Fat Boy held on well to stave off Maryland Line. Miss Benz. who set the pace for six fur- longs, showed a good effort for her first start of the year. ! j S j I ! ! , e , h d g it r L 0 X e " J. 1. e " i e - i - 1
