On the Trot i 1 By MOBRR KURLANSKT Castleton Stable Lends More Color Risen Sun About Ready for Races Insko Menage Arrives From Iowa MAYWOOD PARK. Maywood, 111.. May 11. — A division of the famous Castleton Farms racing stable arrived here earlier in the week in charge of well-known New York trainer Fred Bach to lend additional color to the local racing scene. Castleton Farms, owned by Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Van Lennop, is one of the worlds outstanding breeding establishments. The list of standard-bred sires standing at this Lexington, Ky., nur sery, embraces some of the greatest trotters and pacers that ever raced in this country. There is Worthy Boy 3, 2:021/2; Victory Song »4K 1:57%; Scottish Pence. 1: 57*5 : Good Time, 1:57%; Ensign Hanover, jl:5945: Florican, 1:57%; Bombs Away 2s*. 2:0412; Diplomat Hanover 3 , 2:021/s. and Feder 4, 2:04%h. The four Castleton stallions were credited with winners of 937 dashes and 21,180 in 1954. The broodmare band at the Blue Grass establishment is probably even more impressive, as among the 134 standard-bred matrons are Leta Long, dam of Tar Heel, 1:57; Keystoner, 1:58% and Meadow Pace, 1:59%, the Volomite mare being one of two living dams that have produced three 2:00 performers; Josie Scot, dam of Scottish Chief, 1:59%, and Earls Song, 2 : 00 ; Belle Lincoln, dam of Hodgen, worlds record double-gaited stallion; Florence Hudson, dam of Sir Joseph, 1:58 If,: Taffy Volo, dam of Doctor Spencer, 1:39 4, and Grand Parade, both stallions exported to Italy; Claire Hal, dam of Ensign Lad, 1:09%; Princess Meg. dam of Prince Victor, 2:00%; Libby Scott, dam of Don Scott, 2:01; Libbys Boy, Princess Marina, dam of Maximilian, 2:02h; Iosola Scott, dam of Iosolas Ensign; Sister Mary, dam of Mainliner, and many others with an excellent record as producers of fast -record horses. Castleton s main weapon for free-for-all pacing events in the Chicago area will be the five-year-old Volomite stallion, Dutch Dandy, one of the nations best sidewheel-ers last year. Dutch Dandy, winner of nine races in 1954, comes off a victory skein of four scored at Lexingtons famed Red Mile, where this royally-bred stallion also established his record of 2:00, while his best time over a half-mile track is 2:04. In the unraced Hoot Suite, a daughter of the great Hoot Mon, out of the excellent producer, Fay Hanover, and Handsome Perk, a trotting colt by Perk Axworthy from Lady S., two potential champions might gain their first laurels here. Risen Sun, well known to the local public for his excellent performance at Sportsmans Park two seasons ago, according to trainer Floyd Hannis is about ready to return to competition. The seven-year-old His Honor gelding was on the sidelines all of last season. With earnings of 8,186.25 in four campaigns, Risen Sun is one of the biggest money-earners on the grounds. Another arrival this week was the Insko stable from winter training quarters in Iowa. Youthful Del Insko will do the driving chores for the stable that includes the good pacer, Hal Counsel, and the ultra -consistent trotting mare, Dusty Chimes, as well as eight unraced colts and fillies. Although one of the youngest reinsmen competing at major harness tracks, Insko quickly earned his place among the nations leading sulky pilots and had the Los Angeles press raving about him when he made his debut at Hollywood Park two seasons ago. At the following Santa Anita session. Del not only came close to wresting the meetings driving honors from such established sulky greats as Joe OBrien, Bi Shively and Stanley Adams, but was one of the more sought-after, free-lance drivers. The much expected encounter of Brightside Farms fleet three-year-old, Chester Black, with Bombers Delight. Blue Goose and other fast-record sophomore pacers will not take place in the near future as the stable in charge of trainer Bob Parkinson transferred their activities to Rosecroft Raceway until midsummer. . . . Illinois will set a new record for number of fairs this season, with a total of 99 scheduled, two more than the high of 97 in 1953. . . . Daisy Astra, one of the leading trotters in Chicago last season, is currently the record -holding trotting mare over half mile tracks with a splendid 2:03% effort at Roosevelt Raceway. The first in the series of schooling races conducted at 8:00 p. m., prior to the regular nine-race card, was won by Julias Boy, six-year-old trotting gelding owned by the St. Maurice Stables of Montreal, Canada, and driven by Henry Larochelle in an easy 2:13?..
