Eight Downs Sprinters Seek Midway Lori-Jane Gives Weight to Rivals Mrs. V. E. Smiths Homebred Has Oil Painting, Bull Skin, Jay Jay Cee to Beat Today CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 11.— The ,000 Midway Purse, a six-furlong condition race for four-year-olds and up, is the best event scheduled for decision on the Thursday program at this South Louisville course. The feature attraction will bring out a band of eight seasoned sprinters and it should provide fair sport for patrons of this Derby oval. Mrs. V. E. Smiths homebred Lori-Jane, a four-year-old daughter of Papa Redbird and Sis Baker, is the highweight for the Miday at 116 pounds and she will have the saddle services of Dave Erb. Good winner of three of 10 engagements during her 1954 campaign, Lori-Jane has worked splendidly and raced well thus far this year and holds a royal chance for major honors in the Thursday dash. Mrs. Joseph A. Goodwin, who maintains Patchen Wilkes Farm, Lexington, Ky., will send out Oil Painting in the Midway. The four-year-old homebred miss is sired by Papa Redbird and from the former good race mare, Jacks Jill. Favorably weighted at 104 pounds, the Goodwin filly, who has trained satisfactorily, may take some beating. She probably will be ridden b yeither Lois Cook or Johnny Adams. Mary H. in Line-up for Feature Others expected to start are M. J. Schmitts Mary H., 106; M. A. and E. A. Ginsburgs Woodview Farm homebred Littletori-sired filly, Jay Jay Gee, 104; and M. Carters Bull Skin, 113 pounds. Also Mrs. Jake Lowensteins Sugar Dad, 109, Baylor O. Hickmans Senor Coati, 111. and Mrs. Virginia Schwab, Jr.s Vixen Fixit, 104 pounds. Jockey Don Bowcut will guide Bull Skin in the Midway, Johnny Ralph Adams is engaged , for Vixen Fixit, Forrest Kaelin rides Senor Coati, and L. Forde will be at the reins on Mary H., who flashed high early speed in her last start here. No reins-men were named on Jay Jay Gee and Sugar Dad. Dr. L. A. Lewis First Lap, a speedy juvenile son of Ky. Colonel and Anne Odelle, remains the early choice for the fifty-fifth running of the 0,000 Bashford Manor Stakes, set for renewal Saturday. Others rated probable starters in the five furlongs week-end allowance stake are Leo Cail-louettes Joes Best, Emil Denemarks Mo-toramic, Clifford Mooers Shushanna Kid, Henry Forrests Judge Ray K.. a recent visitor to the Downs winners ring; Hasty House Farms Roman Boss, Sam E.
