Corinthian #Chase Belmont Headliner Small Field of Seven Named For 50th Running; Ancestor, Neji One of Two Couplings BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I.. N. Y.. May 11. — The ,500-added Corinthian Steeplechase will have its fiftieth running here Thursday. A small field of seven horses, including two sets of couplings, has been named for this test at about two mileo, with Mrs. Ogden Phipps entry of Neji, 155, and Ancestor, 146 pounds, looming short-priced favorites. Neji won a hurdle race here May 2 for his re-entry, outgaming Permian while giving away 23 pounds, and that horse came back with a victory. Last year, Neji was ranked close behind King Commander and Shipboard in the steeplechase division. Ancestor has won two steeplechases at this meeting in style that appeared playful. He picks up 12 pounds since beating King Commander by three and a half lengths in last weeks Charles Appleton Memorial, but appears capable of carrying respectable burdens. Frank "Dooley" Adams has been named for both Neji and Ancestor, an indication that trainer G. H. "Pete" Bostwick intends to start only one of his sisters horses. The other coupling is composed of Mont-peliers Shipboard, 155, and M. B. Metcalf. Jr.s Beaupre, 136 pounds. Albert Foot will pilot Shipboard, while Scotty Schulhofer will be on Beaupre. They are expected to be second choices in the wagering. Last Raced in Gwathmey Shipboard has not been seen since lie bobbled and lost Foot when in a contending position near the end of the Temple Gwathmey Chase here last October. He won the Grand National Chase before that, among other brilliant successes. Shipboard has been training cleverly and doesnt appear too heavily burdened. Beaupre lacked the class of Shipboard last year, but won an overnight steeplechase here in October under highweight. then was beaten by the mediocre Coit at Red Bank, while trying to carry 162 pounds. The Corinthian is completed by James F. McHughs Jam, 137; Mrs. C. E. Adams Errolford, 135, and Lawrence Troianos Curly Joe, 131 pounds. Jam gave considerable promise at one time, but was a rank and careless jumper. His jumping has improved, but he showed no speed when finishing sixth behind Ancestor, April 28. Earl Phelps, his regular rider, will be in the saddle. Errolford turned in a good race to be fourth to Ancestor, King Commander and River Jordan in the Appleton last week, while Curly Joe finished seventh in that event. Thursdays flat races hardly qualify as supporting features, the best being the two divisions of the ,000 Oyster Bay for three-year-old fillies at a mile and a sixteenth.
