Nashua Nashua Easy Easy Belmont Belmont Victor; Victor; Blue Blue Choir Choir Wins Wins Turf Turf Stake Stake Tonsifia Triumphs In Filly-Mare Race Grissom Sophomore Almost Length Before Trip Lightly In Rose Leaves at Detroit By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT RACE COURSE, Livonia, Mich., June 11.-— Tonsina, a quick three-year-old. daughter of Buster and Spindrift, carried the silks of the Motor City-owned T". Alie Grissom stable to a gamely achieved victory here this cloudy afternoon in the sixth running of the 1,480 Rose Leaves Stakes before a half-holiday throng of 16,957 spectators. Responding readily to a steady ride from jockey Larry Gilligan, the locally owned winner sped to the finish of the six-furlong filly and mare stake with a three-quarters of a length advantage on her nearest rival, Mrs. George C. Whites hard-charging Trip Ligl tly. Slightly more than a length back, Affeld and Landys Betsy T ran third as she nosed out Mrs. A. P. Richards Sweet Josie for that portion of the Rose Leaves spoils. Only Has 100-Pound Impost Tonsina, lightweight under the allowance terms of the stake, shouldered but 100 pounds, and she raced through the muddy going in a creditable 1:13%. Good winner of four engagements during her juvenile campaign and an. overnight event at Gulfstream Park, the Grissom miss was not too well regarded in the "tote," and those who backed her in the straight pool received 3.80. Immediately after the running, Mrs. James H. Inglis, wife of Michigans state racing commissioner, presented a handsome silver trophy to owner Grissom in a brief winners ring ceremony. Marion H. VanBergs Foxie Jeanie went to the post favorite in the field of 11 starters, representing eight interests, but she failed to stay after flashing early speed. The Nebraska-owned filly was in rather tight quarters approaching the stretch and, after jockey Lois Cook, took her up to secure room, she failed to recover and wound up a soundly beaten ninth. Tonsina entered the stretch with a clear margin after putting Cols Daughter away I and, responding to Gilligans hustling tactics, repulsed the bids df Betsy T and Trip Lightly. The latter filly came from well back during the drive but she was unable to overtake the flying winner while Betsy T, who raced in the deepest going next to the inner rail, simply could not threaten and dropped back steadily in the last sixteenth. Sweet Josie, an invader from ThistleDown, turned in a good performance to be fourth. Fun for Two Surprises *Mrs. M. McDonnells Fun for Two, smai-tly handled by Johnny Sellers, who was completing a saddle double, beat seven other three-year-olds here this cloudy afternoon in the Livonia Jaycees Purse. Taking command during the stretch run, Fun for Two stuck diligently to his task, repulsing a bold challenge from Ro-Mar Stables favored Bon-Ru-Mar, three quarters of a length separating the leaders at the end of the one mile jaunt. Four lengths away, J. OBriens Blarney Jack ran third while O. C. Kroneman and Sons Early Foot, leader during the initial six furlongs, lasted for fourth in the field of eight starters. I Fun for Two, a roan son of Side Boy and the one-time useful race mare, Margo G., raced the eight furlongs over the muddy track in 1:43%. Lightly-regarded in the speculation, the McDonnell colt returned his backers 8 to 1 after posting his second success of the 1955 campaign. A pair of New Orleans-owned platers won the Daily Double events; A. P. Giordanos favored Little Don G., handled by Bobby Baird, captured the one mile and one-sixteenth opener and Anthony Graf-fagninis Fancy-Deb, well ridden by little Dick Miguez, trimmed seven three-year-old rivals in the six-furlong second race.
